Pottstown is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pottstown is located on the South Branch of the Susquehanna River. The area now comprising Pottstown was first settled by German immigrants in 1781 as Ephrata Township and then in 1812 as Pottsborough Township. The name "Pottstown" originated from John Porter, an early settler. In 1819, when Pennsylvania became a state, Pottsborough and Ephrata were merged to form Pottstown Township. In 1837, Daniel Worthington purchased of land east of the Susquehanna River from William Fenton for $1000 dollars. He founded what would become Worthingtonville and named it after himself and his father-in-law George Washington Smith (1762-1834). The community grew slowly until about 1830 when a canal was built connecting the Susquehanna River with nearby anthracite coal mines and mills. This led to increased economic development and more people moving to Pottstown during this time period. By 1850, POTTSBURGH had reached its peak with over 1,000 residents living there; however construction on Erie Canal #2 destroyed much of this growth and by 1860 only 300 residents remained in town – most of whom worked at local quarries or in agriculture or manufacturing.[1] However one important aspect of that decline was continuing immigration which contributed to mass abolitionism being preached throughout much rural America during this time period[2]. Census results for 2000 showed that there were still 1123 residents living in town but industrial production had decreased significantly as well due to declines in anthracite mining jobs[3], although housing prices have since recovered somewhat thanks to recent expansions within the area including Reynolds American Manufacturing Company’s plant which opened up around 2009[4]. There are also several small businesses active within town such as Blue Diamond Brewing Co., First Unitarian Universalist Church of Christ & Dwight Harnack Congregational Church,[5], Kwik Trip USA (a convenience store), CVS Pharmacy [6] along with numerous restaurants all catering towards a primarily agricultural flavor such as Red Lion Tavern & Grill [7], Shapiro's Pizza [8] as well various beauty salons/spas within walking distance while other services such as health insurance are available through areas like Pennsilvania Health Care System or doctor shopping through online platforms like Health Net Pharmacies etc.. The largest employer currently within town limits is Reynolds American Manufacturing Company where more than 1500 employees operate seven plants across two states employing over 20% of their total workforce statewide[9]. Additionally several other major employers located close by include GE Appliances Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Allstate Insurance Companies etc.. This indicates both continued job growth potential outside traditional industries while also indicating some degree thereof despite large dropsoff recently seen within those same sectors due mainly à la carte restaurant industry experiencing rapid consolidation lately[10][11]; nonetheless overall employment levels remain healthy given current geopolitical conditions
