The first Europeans to visit what is now Pottstown were traders and missionaries from Holland in 1684. The name "Pottstown" likely derives from Potts Creek which flowed through the town. In 1710, Benjamin Franklin founded a school in the town and it became known as Pottstown Academy because of this. In 1792, Pottstown was incorporated as a borough. In 1868, Pottstown became the seat of Bucks County government after Altoona was annexed by the county. In 1922, when Philadelphia annexed portions of Bucks County (including Altoona), Pottstown became an unincorporated community withinPhiladelphia again. In 1978, then-Mayor James Aites proclaimed May Day "POTTSTOWN DAY" to celebrate its role in local history and culture. The proclamation also said that "the day promotes creativity and entrepreneurship." On September 11th 1912 during World War I Bombing raids against German targets throughout Europe many citizens of Pottstown took shelter with friends or family inside their homes; some 3rd generation residents still remember this day vividly today!
