Pottstown, Pennsylvania is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. Pottstown is the only municipality in Bucks County and lies on the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Allentown. The original settlers of what is now Pottstown were Quakers who built their community near Reading in 1718. They named their new settlement after John Potts (1711-1778), an Anglican priest who had been sent to America as part of a missionary effort to evangelize the Native American nations. In 1782, when land east of Lancaster was sold off for development into townships, Pottstown became one of these new townships. In 1854, parts of central Bucks County were detached to formthe township of Easton and Pottstown became part of this new township. In 1877, when another part of central Bucks County was detached to formthe borough of Girardville, Pottstown again became a part of Girardville Township - becoming one of its seven wards until 1974 when it was annexed by Philadelphia as the city's second ward. On November 3rd referendum in 2014Pottstown voters passed a resolution endorsing annexation by Philadelphia as an opportunity for economic growth and job creation within its borders while preserving many aspects that make its community unique including its own government and cultural heritage
