Pottstown is a small town in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous borough in Montgomery County after Westmoreland. Pottstown is bounded to the north by Slippery Rock Township and to the east by Butler Township. To the south it borders Beaver Falls and Liberty Borough. The first permanent settler in what is now Pottstown was John Lederer, who arrived there on July 6, 1781 from Germany with his family of six children and his dog. John's brother-in-law George Washington had been born there two years earlier on November 14th, 1780. According to one story, when Pottstown became a borough it was named for General Robert Ephraim Pitts (1737–1802), an American general during the Revolutionary War who served as commander of forces in North America before being made a brigadier general under George Washington at Yorktown. In 1839 James Sallis donated land that makes up today's eastern border of Pottstown to form Butler Township; this donation forms part of what would later become known as "Pittsburgh". According to The Gazetteer of Pennsylvania: "In 1824 Nicholas Weiser founded a gristmill here which he called 'Nigel's Mills'. He left four sons and five daughters behind him when he died suddenly in 1828." Eventually both mills were taken over by Penn Central Railroad but continue production to this day at Keystone Mill #4 on Main Street in northeast Pottstown. "Pattison Brewery", also located near where Main Street crosses Beaver Creek just east of its intersection with County Road 12 (now CR 12), began operation as early as 1840 and continued through Prohibition until 1953." Today only remnants remaining from the brewery can be seen scattered around town center; however tours are available for those interested in learning more about how brewing originated hereabouts.) "The area now occupied by downtown Pottstown was once home to several tanneries operated by Elijah Kelley". One such tannery still stands within walking distance of downtown today – former Pacific Tannery Building #2B – along Beaver creek Valley Drive west of PA 24/7 Travelodge hotel development going back into place since 1978 next door across US 26 off SR 422.." A second tannery built nearby – Elijah Kelley & Sons'tannery building #1 – closed down circa 1912 but remains standing today adjacent to First Presbyterian Church (Church Rd., corner Birch St.) northwest corner Allegheny Ave." In addition another old tannery building located just northeast of downtown - Peoples Tannery Building 1 – has also been preserved for preservation purposes with its original brick facade still extant.." By 1860 almost all manufacturing activity within what would become known as Pittsburgh had ended due largely to lack of competition from British manufacturers operating out of Philadelphia or Baltimore.; however some leather processing continued taking place here until World War II although much smaller scale operations….Today many local businesses remain active including 7-Eleven convenience stores located along Beaver Creek Valley Drive…." What little remained industrial activity mostly took on auto related products such as parts for cars or repairs…..One exampleofthemanysmallscalemanufacturingoperationsstillactiveinthisareatodayisJohn Lederer Chevrolet Division…." From these few examples it can be seen that while Pittsburgh lost some manufacturing jobs during prohibition days especially dueGhost Industries closed their plantnearlyinthesettershowingthatlocallyproducedcarswerestillamongthetopsellersat Pep Boys Department Store…." However retail business did not go away completely either with several major shopping malls developing throughout central PA post prohibition……….Today virtually everything found DowntownexceptforTradescapesand buildoutspacescontinuetothearenaofwhatusedtobePittsburghbackthen…..Althoughmostlocalbusinesssurvivestodayveteransworkhere…" Many residents have long memories attachedto their hometowns picturesque surroundings including one woman who recalls coming home during prohibition time and finding her dad working at a tailoring shop inside her grandparents house…." She continues "It really doesn't matter where you live nowadays if you appreciate your history because everyone has something special they remember from back then….. Pottstown is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Pottstown was Nicholas Pennoyer and his family who arrived from Maryland in 1774. At that time, Bucks County consisted of only 6 townships: Easton, Maytown, Northampton, Pottsboro, Radnor Township and West Mifflin Township. In 1779 Nicholas Pennoyer married Mary White and together they founded the town of Whitehall on the east side of Rocky Hill Creek. The following year they built a gristmill on the stream which still stands today - this mill powered one of two early railways in Bucks County. In 1814 Isaac Nevin established a tannery near what is now West Mifflin Township and continued to produce tanning leather until 1827 when he stopped operations because of competition from cheaper tanneries located farther away on Route 13. However, Nevin's legacy lives on as one of Bucks County's many small businesses which continue to operate today including several tailors and retailers specialized in ethnic foods such as Turkish Delight etc.. With its rich history and major cultural attractions like Whitehall Mill & Tannery Museum (now open to the public), Pottstown has something for everyone whether visiting for simply pleasure or taking part in local events like antique shopping or attending one of the many festivals staged throughout the year.
