On July 1, 1865, Pottstown became an incorporated city when all of Huntingdon County were consolidated into one government under Act No.(3) Of Published Laws 3/1/1865 effective “As At This Day” Pottstown has experienced many changes over its history including being known as a manufacturing center during World War II; becoming an agricultural community following World War I; experiencing rapid growth during the late 20th century; becoming an urban center following World War II; becoming an independent municipality following annexation by neighboring Philadelphia City on November 3rd 1968; and most recently being hit hard by the Great Recession which has seen unemployment rates reach levels not seen since before he war began
