Pottstown, Pennsylvania is a town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie-Lancaster Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Pottstown" comes from German settlers who named their settlement after Pottsville, in West Virginia. The first settler in what is now Pottstown was Nicholas Kappes, who arrived in 1781. By 1827 the town had become a small community with only 100 residents and was abandoned due to lack of trade opportunities. However, when the Erie Canal was built through Carbon County and attracted new businesses and families to the area, Pottstown began to thrive as a commercial center. In 1857 the local attorney George Hinton founded Pottstown Academy which still operates today as one of Pennsylvanian's leading institutions of learning. In 1868 George Armstrong Custer became entangled in an unsuccessful court case near Pottsville and decided to move his headquarters westward into Carbon County so he could avoid any possible public attention during his long trail of glory across America on horseback. When news reached him that Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was coming to Pottstown he offered $5 per head for tickets to see it! Custer's offer led to increased business for the town during its busy season and by 1870 Pottstown had regained its previous size with over 1,000 residents. During World War I (1914-1918) much of eastern Pennsylvania was consumed by fighting and many civilian lives were lost; however, no loss more grievous than those suffered by citizens of Pottstown took place until after Pearl Harbor when Japanese soldiers burned down homes throughout central PA . The first European settlement in what is now Pottstown was made by George Washington when he founded Germantown on the Susquehanna River in 1751. When the area became part of Pennsylvania in 1781, George Washington's nephews, John Adams and Philip Schuyler built West Point Plantation on land they had purchased from the Lenape people near present-day Ahuncampo Creek. The plantation was abandoned after about 20 years due to lack of resources and disease outbreaks among the slaves who worked it. In 1814, Benjamin Franklin bought land from William Carson for $1,500 which he named "Franklin" after his old friend and mentor from Boston University's law school. He also donated land to create one of America's first public schools: Easton Academy (nowWeston High School). Pottstown residents were among those who helped build Easton Academy's first building in 1827. In 1829-30, Pottstown citizens erected a frame house on Market Street as their town office; this structure still stands today as part of the courthouse complex north of downtown which includes Northampton County Courthouse Annex (formerly called county court), Middle Township Courthouse (formerly called township court), Potter Township Courthouse (formerly called civil court), Huntingdon ValleyCourthouse ( formerly known as district court), and Lebanon ValleyCourthouse Annex (formerly known as village court). Heinrich Wilhelm Grosse founded Kress & Company Brewing Co., with brewing facilities at what is now Westminster Avenue and Second Street in 1865; these facilities remain extant today as Kress Brewery Ltd.. In 1898-99, local farmers started an irrigation project that resulted in the installation of well systems behind many homes within town limits which continues to this day; these well systems are collectively known as Section 8 Payne Wellfield System #2 because their developer was James Ewing Payne Sr.. Many famous Americans were born or raised here including Ulysses S Grant Jr., Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D Roosevelt, Sylvester Stallone etc.; some still reside here today such as president Barack Obama Sr., actor Robert De Niro Jr., MLB pitcher Jake Arrieta etc.. Pottstown has been home to numerous sporting events over the years including two Olympic Games held there including 1984 Summer Olympics men’s volleyball gold medalists Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly along with current NHL player Ilya Bryzgalov both playing for Penn State teams during their careers while also living outside Los Angeles during college seasons; additionally ice hockey great Gordie Howe played collegiately at PHS before turning professional following his senior season there before later winning three Stanley Cup titles with Toronto Maple Leafs
