Pottstown is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, located about 20 miles southwest of Philadelphia. As of the 2000 census, its population was 9,884. The name "Pottstown" is derived from Potts Creek and Pottstown Creek. The first settlers in what is now Pottstown were Quakers who arrived from Northampton County, Massachusetts in 1681. They named their community after John Potts (1624-1702), an early settler and member of the General Court of Pennsylvania. In 1753, George Washington visited Pottstown while on his way to battle at Yorktown and noted that it looked like "a very pretty village". Washington further described it as "a little place but well situated" and added that it had a good market place where valuable goods were sold. The first post office was established in 1814 and was called West Pittsburg until 1829 when it changed its name to Pottstown. The settlement grew rapidly during the 1800s due to coal mining and other industry efforts. By 1900, there were over 10,000 residents living in Pottstown with a total payroll of $1 million dollars!During World War II, local production helped contribute to Allied victory by providing munitions for the war effort. Today, Pottstown remains an important center for business and culture in the Lehigh Valley region.
