In 1851, Pottstown became the first city in Pennsylvania to pass a gun law. This law regulated the sale and use of firearms, as well as their transportation. It also set forth specific requirements for handguns, such as having a Spring-field Armory made specifically for them. The ordinance remained in place until 1986, when it was repealed by then Mayor Bob Day. That same year, the borough passed an ordinance that allowed citizens to carry handguns without a permit. This ordinance has been in effect ever since. Today, gun hammer history is still being written in Pottstown. For example, there are multiple businesses that sellguns and ammunition here (including Gun Emporium), and this town remains one of the most heavily armed communities in all of Pennsylvania.

Some notable landmarks include Main Street's Antique Hardware store which has been continuously running since 1848, Pottstown's only post office (established 1837), State University of PA's main campus (established 1907), and two churches - First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1798 and Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church which was erected in 1909 - both of which are still active today.

Pottstown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Montgomery County and one of the six municipalities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area that are not part of any county. The first settler in what is now Pottstown was Nicholas Weimer who arrived on the ship "Dolphin" on October 20, 1784. He had come from Germany with his family and built a cabin near present-day State Street and North Front Street. Weimer's son John also settled here about 1800 and took up farming. In 1814, Benjamin Pugh, a tanner by trade and a member of the Democratic Party from Philadelphia, moved to this area from Huntingdon Township in Berks County. He began to tan hides for local merchants and soon became known as "the Father of Pottstown." By 1824 he had built himself an extensive brickyard adjoining his tannery on North Front Street. Benjamin Pugh's grandson Daniel Pugh founded Duchamps Furniture Store on South Front Street in 1868 which became one of downtown's earliest businesses. The store continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1951 due to economic adversity; however, some remnants remain today including Daniel Pugh's original business cardFrom 1902 until 1954 all post office functions were conducted out of Weimer House (now School District 103 Building), located at 215 Locust Avenue north of Market Streets. In 1876 two brothers - Samuel Sweeny (1849-1928) and Arthur Sweeny (1859-1935) - started an agricultural cooperative named 'The Rural Mechanics Cooperative Association'. They bought 4 acres (1 km2) of land east of present-day University Drive NE for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). The cooperative established fields such as hay barns, dairy yards, orchards, grain elevators/storage buildings and other farm buildings like a sawmill; these structures still stand today within walking distance of their original locations! What followed was perhaps one of the most successful cooperatives ever formed within American agriculture: over time more than 1 million Americans participated actively through membership dues or through purchasing goods directly from members! Pottstown was founded in 1798 by the Potts family. The town is named for Colonel John Pott, a Scottish-born American Revolutionary War soldier and statesman who served as the first governor of Pennsylvania. He helped to create the United States Constitution and became one of its most influential figures. In 1814, Pottstown became a township within in York County, Pennsylvania. In 1868, Pottstown annexed part of Westmoreland County and became a borough. On March 15, 1900, Pottstown achieved city status when it adopted its current name.
