The townspeople soon began to use rifles for hunting as well as defense against Indians and bandits; rifle shootings became an annual event in town. On July 16th of 1896, Benjamin Butler opened his Arms & Armour Shop on Market Street in Pottstown with twenty-five employees and commenced business as a gunsmith and rifle dealer specializing in new models of firearms including Model 1895's chambered for 7mm Remington Magnum ammunition which became extremely popular among marksmen during the late nineteenth century. Eventually other businesses joined forces with Butler’s operation such as Wm Sibley Firearms Corporation who also manufactured rifles under license from arms merchant Ben Butler (father of Benjamin). By 1916 firearms manufacturing had become so monopolized within the community that demand dried up for replacement parts which forced many small businesses out of business along with their equipment which were then auctioned off to pay debts owed to various creditors.* In 1934, Arsenal Ammunition Company was organized by Samuel Armstrong who manufactures all types of ammunition including 9mm Parabellum pistols using brass cases imported from Germany.* At its peak production Armalite Ammunition Manufacturing Company employed 1,500 people across five plants located in Lancaster County* However production ended due to World War II when armaments manufacturers were diverted to produce munitions needed for American war effort while European factories produced civilian goods.* However arsenals continue operations until they closed down due to economic conditions in 2009*
Pottstown is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,771 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton-Bethlehem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pottstown was settled by English colonists in 1681 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River between Easton and Bethlehem. The town's name is derived from Potts Township, in which it was incorporated as a borough on December 25, 1854. Pottstown became an agricultural community with notable crops including wheat, corn, soybeans, and oats; however, it also produced coal and oil until the early 21st century. In addition to its economic significance as a center of commerce and industry during its history, Pottstown has been home to several colleges and universities: US Military Academy (1861), Lehigh University (1920), Dickinson School of Law (1929), John Jay College of Criminal Justice (1973), Moravian University (1992). In 1998 Pottstown established itself as an official UNESCO City of Culture after being honored with this distinction by then Mayor Edward Rendell. As part of this program Pottstown received funding from UNESCO to develop a city guidebook and invested in public education throughout their development process.Today Pottstown continues to grow in popularity for all that it has to offer! In 1941, Pottstown erected its own school system with six schools: one high school and five elementary schools; also two post-secondary institutions: Littlestown University (a private university) and New York Institute of Technology (formerly Penn State). Pottstown is home to several museums including the Benjamin Franklin Museum and Library, Knoppers Park Preserve and Historical Society Museum; as well as many other cultural attractions such as Hollywood Casino which has been vacant since 1984 when it was sold to Atlantic City Sands Corporation for $219 million dollars.
