The first settlers in what is now Pottstown arrived in 1797 and were forced out of their land by a band of Iroquois Indians. A post office was established at Pottstown in 1827 and remained in operation until 1923. The town's name originates from Potts Township, which was named for General James Potts who fought against the Shawnee Tribe during the American Revolutionary War. When it became apparent that coal would not be a major player inPennsylvania's economy within many years, businesses closed and people moved away from Pottstown. However, some residents decided to stay and start anew with new businesses like a grocery store (1930), auto repair shop (1948), millinery store (1970) and more recently a pizzeria (2007). Today there are still many small businesses that operate hand-to-mouth due to lack of available resources or competition from larger companies. These include: two restaurants/cafés: One with national exposure called "Pizza Place" and another locally owned "Garden Grill". There are also several small shops including one that does only organic produce - another example of how local business flourishes despite competition from larger stores. There have been efforts made over time to revive aspects of downtown such as its music scene which has seen revitalization since 2006 when a nightlife district opened up near the train station known as "The District." According to the US Census Bureau, 3,812 people lived in Pottstown as of 2010; 2% less than Altoona-Johnstown-Kilkenny PA Combined population size at that time! Although this may reflect an overall decrease in popularity for rural Pennsylvania towns relative to metropolitan areas such as Altoona/Johnstown/Kilkenny – especially given mills’ resurgence elsewhere – it nevertheless represents an increase over 2000 when only 1% fewer people lived here! This suggests increased economic opportunity for those who choose to live here regardless of location or past experiences with industry
