A women’s suffrage parade began on Saturday morning, August 15th, 1912 led by Mrs John Fenton (1847 – 1915), one of two women to serve as mayors of Philadelphia before that city’s incorporation into Pennsylvania took effect on February 14th 1913; widow of Captain Isaac Fenton (1793–1870) who fought at Gettysburg during the American Civil War and later served as Mayor of Philadelphia between 1870 and 1872 On November 3rd 1913 when America entered World War 1 with Germany as their aggressor following Belgium’s neutrality declaration on October 29th 1914 issue of “The Evening Bulletin” which detailed all negotiations leading up to war - after days of protest against being kept out - General Order No 9 came down from headquarters forbidding male citizens over 21 years old from going to any military service or aiding them therein even if they were not registered with their social security number; almost immediately afterwards over 4500 men had deserted either through lack thereof knowledge or because they were afraid for their wives & children back home There were 144 total casualties including both enlisted men and officers killed or missing without leave due to weather conditions that included sleet & snow storms rather than combat By 1917 more than 6000 men had joined the army & navy thru draft registration centers located throughout western Pa but only about 1000 actually served In 1940 over 8000 men had join forces within Penn State Army National Guard
