In the early 1800s, when Philadelphia was the leading commercial center in America, ammunition manufacturers thrived. Ammunition companies produced all sorts of firearms and explosives, including handguns and cannons. In Pottstown, Pennsylvania, one such company was Samuel Colt’s Patent Arms Company. The Colt family had a long history with arms manufacturing. The father of Samuel Colt, Jonathan Colt, founded a gunpowder company in 1670. Many members of the family went on to become important weapons manufacturers and entrepreneurs. One of these families was Colonel John Browning, who developed rifles for the British military during World War I. Samuel Colt’s Patent Arms Company was started by Samuel Colt in 1824 as a small arms manufacturer. For years it operated out of a small shop at 9th and Market Streets in Philadelphia. It is estimated that between 1824 and 1860, Colt’s manufactured over 1 million pistols and revolvers! The Armory Building at 6th and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia was built as part of Samuel Colt’s factory complex in 1825-26. It served as headquarters for both the company and its manufacturing subsidiaries until it burned down in 1876. After building his first handgun at his father’s old shop near Centreville (now Latrobe), Maryland, in 1797-98 (the first American made firearm), Sam born into an overly active family: his older brother John died young; four sisters gave birth to siblings; there were too many people to keep track of everything – especially since Sam could never seem to stay still for very long (he loved movement). As he grew into manhood he realized that if he wanted something done well he needed someone else around him who could also do it well himself so he hired an assistant named James Wirtz to help manage things back then “like an academician having charge over menial boys under his care” according to one contemporary source The Factory System: A Study In American Industry (1915). So effective did Wirtz become that even after leaving Colts production line management behind him when he took up business ownership himself some twenty five years later Shot Show Business: An Interpretation Of Its History And Meaning By Arthur Ashe(1976) authoritatively suggests that before Wirtz “Colt probably employed no more than two hundred men directly or indirectly[.] His factories numbered about two hundred fifty men altogether; but their product amounted only to about fifteen thousand guns per year—a mere fraction of one percent of all exports from America…. much less than one-tenth [of] what America exported annually then….. At best this tiny percentage can be credited with having done more than anything else contributing ultimately to our national security during those dark days just prior to World War I’

Ammunition history in Pottstown, Pennsylvania began with the first shots being fired at Fort Donelson on November 17, 1807. The town was originally named for Captain John Pottstown of the 4th Regiment of Militia, which was later redesignated as the 6th Infantry Regiment. On July 10, 1861, during the American Civil War, Pottstown was garrisoned by Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee. When Union troops arrived to take over the garrison on July 12, 1861, many of the Confederate soldiers surrendered without a fight and were taken into custody. One of these soldiers was Captain John Pottstown who received a Citation for his bravery in this event. In 1870 ammunition storage depot burned down and all that remained were some pieces of building and a few bullets left behind.
