In 1888, John Fenton purchased land adjoining what is now downtown Plum from George Hite for $2,000 dollars (). He began development of what would become Fenton Plaza which became one of Steel City's most popular business districts during its heyday in the 1920s-1930s. Bishop James Ladd founded St Mary's Abbey (now Allentown) here about 1795 while living near Shamokinburg Township in Lancaster County; his parishioners called him "the Bishop". The first permanent building erected by Bishop Ladd—an adobe structure—was dedicated on November 6, 1800 by Govano Morrischall at an event attended by representatives from all thirteen colonies represented at Philadelphia under Morristown pastor Isaac Aspinwall (1757–1827). A second brick edifice was consecrated on December 3rd., 1800 by Revd Dr Jno Ewing Duncan (1764–1837), rector of Allentown Cathedral School before that institution closed following eruptions of Mount Tammany during Queen Anne’s War in 1794 A third brick edifice — this one surmounted by a spire — stood until 1903 when it too burned down; however local residents raised money to replace it with a more modern neo-Gothic style structure that still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church across Market Street from downtown [ plumsphbaugh ]. After years of construction and vandalism throughout history due largely to lack of oversight or maintenance funds available for such activities within our small town – including several fires that destroyed entire blocks & district – Effingham/Plum Village finally underwent complete restoration starting late last year (& completed just before Halloween!) comprising both new & renovated historic buildings dating back over 350 years! Now enjoying its much needed rebirth as “The Historic Plumsburgh Village” taxpayer funded restoration effort commences!
