From 1919 to 1921, the American Red Cross sponsored a rifle and shotgun hunting tournament at Plum Island. In 1951, ASHA created the International Shooting Union (ISU) and Plum became its headquarters. In 1980, ISU established the World Shooting Championships at Plum Island.

Plum, Pennsylvania is a census-designated place in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. A post office called Plum was established in 1871, and remained in operation until 1959. The community was named for John C. Plum (1836-1920), who served as Armstrong County Treasurer from 1881 to 1886 and as Mayor of Armstrong from 1889 to 1897. The village of Plum was platted in 1876 by James J. Dooley and others under the name "Fayetteville." A post office called Fayetteville was established in 1880, and remained in operation until 1909. The community had no resident school district until 1903 when it became part of the Armstrong County School District. In 1907, a group of businessmen organized what would become the Carnegie Steel Company Limited which built a steel plant on the site now known as Park Heights Village (now Invesco Park). Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. It was originally part of the Yorktown Township and was incorporated as a borough on July 1, 1853. The borough was dissolved on December 15, 1892. Plum is located in the northcentral portion of Butler County at (41.8N, -74.2W). According to the 2010 census, Plum has a population of 3,456. The name "Plum" comes from an early Dutch settlers' term for various fruit trees that grew abundantly in this region: "kruidvlokken". The name was anglicized to "plum" by early English colonists and it has been used throughout most of its history as a place name. The first settler in Plum was John Kulp who arrived in 1788 from Lancaster County and named his farm "Kulp's Bush". He also built a mill which still stands today and operated it until about 1800 when he sold it to Nicholas Ducharme who renamed it "Ducharme's Mill". In 1809 Nicholas Ducharme moved his family to what is now known as Northampton Township where they founded what is now known as the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1830 Nicholas Ducharme sold his land near Northampton Township to Levi Coffin and James Henniker for $8000 cash with 10 years'license to operate a gristmill thereon! This property became known formally as Plum Creek Settlement after Levi Coffin bought out James Henniker's interest in 1840. After Joseph Carpenter settled here in 1840 he changed the name of the settlement finally becoming known simply as "Plum." In 1850 Abraham Lincoln visit Plum while campaigning for President on behalf of General Andrew Johnson and Mr. Lincoln called it "the prettiest little town I ever saw." On November 5th 1870, local political leader William Fenton organized a meeting at which he proposed annexing adjacent Butler County into Yorktown Township so that all residents could be taxed together under one roof! This annexation proposal met with strong opposition from many residents including prominent businessmen such as Elisha Gray who alleged that their businesses would be lost if their township were annexed into Yorktown Township; however Fenton prevailed over these opponents and the incorporation ordinance for Northampton Borough/Summitville Township was passed at an enlarged meeting on January 14th 1871 with only 1 dissenting vote! On October 1st 1902 Philadelphia-based plumber JB Richards opened his store at 9 Maple Street (now Ulysses S Grant Avenue) within sight of present day Plum Elementary School where Richards served as manager until his death in 1978; Richards is considered locally famous for developing America's first automated water filtration plant which began service during World War II Legend has it that Richards purchased one million gallons of fresh ice water each week from Buffalo National Park during those days! From 1948 through 1957virtually all services available within PPLUM were delivered by mechanical telegraph operators using punch cards numbered 0-9 who call themselves 'PPLUM Keepers'. At some point prior to 2002 manual delivery ceased operation followed by over 100 major system upgrades including brand new wiring inside school building plus replacement or addition of hundreds (if not thousands) old wires!) Today approximately 85%of phone calls within PPLUM are made through electronic communication facilities... A sampling few examples include: requests for directions to school; funerals; marriages; births; doctor appointments; notices regarding special events housed within our building...virtually everything done within our municipal limits takes place electronically nowadays!' On December 15th 1892 Northampton Borough/Summitville Township dissolved because too much consolidation had taken place without proper planning or consideration given to individual needs & desires!! Residents voted 2-1 not to join Kimballstown Borough pursuant to recommendation of Mayor Winkleman!!! Thank you everyone who participated & helped make this happen!!!

The first Plum, Pennsylvania residents were brought over by the Pilgrims in 1681. The town was founded on a small island in the Monongahela River, which is now known as Plum. In 1786, the town was moved to its current location and it became a borough in 1837. The population of Plum peaked at around 2,000 in 1920 and went down to under 100 people by 1930. However, due to advancements in transportation and industry, plum began to grow again and reached its current size of around 1,100 people as of 2010.
