Plum is located on I-676 and PA Route 153, east of Reading and south of Allentown. The name " Plum" comes from two settlements called "Pine Valley" and "Pine Hill". In 1786, landowner James Sloan donated 4 acres (1 ha) to the Borough of Reading for a public square. On March 15, 1867, Plum was chartered as a borough with a population of 150 inhabitants by an act of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania. On November 3rd 1870, Act No. 176 created Bellefonte Township within Plum along with neighboring Haverford Township in Berks County. In 1892-1893 three brothers named John Wirtz bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of where today's Plum stands from Abram Kapp to build what would become their farmstead known as Kapp’s Mills which still stands today next to Rte 153 and I-676

Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Plum is part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Plum was George Hargrave in 1792. The name of the town derives from a type of plum that grows abundantly near the village and was early marketable for its fruit. In 1825, John Dennison donated land to build a sawmill and store on which Plum developed as a rural community with several hundred residents. By 1860, Plum had an population of 1,100 people and two schools; one for boys and one for girls. In 1892, three brothers founded the Penn Central Railroad Company in order to create transportation links between Pittsburgh and New York City; Plum became their terminus at Cherry Hill (now Huntingdon Valley). Passenger service stopped operations on December 15th, 1971 after 73 years of service due to budget cuts by Penn Central's parent company Conrail; however freight traffic continued until 1985 when all trains were eliminated except for occasional excursions into Philadelphia through Cherry Hill during off-peak hours. plums history can be traced back to 1792 when George Hargrave settled in what is now known as Plum Township along with his family including his wife Hannah and four children: James (1793-1851), Martha (1795-1854), Sarah (1800-1853) and John (1802-1847). George worked his farmstead until he sold it tax free to others about 1800 then moved onto other property where he raised hogs until 1824 when he built a sawmill on this site becoming Plummer Mill & Store bearing his original name from before him also meaning many things over time such as "a little piece of ground". This mill did very well commercially so much so that some people began calling him "the founder" even though it actually may have been another man named George who purchased this land eight miles northeast of present day Plummer PA & started building there around 1800 called “George’s Mill” but most likely it goes back much further than that as we only know about him starting construction because records show him doing it around 1800 & continuing thru 1825 which coincides perfectly with what locals say they remember happening back then! Soon after came James who married Hannah but soon after that Marthas husband passed away leaving her widowed again giving rise to Sarah who ran the housekeeping side then 3rd generation John took over running things taking care of family affairs too! It wasn't till 1861 when 2nd generation John bought out 3rd gen Johns interest making him sole owner & headman! After getting government help via Congressional Act (#241) Jacob Davis acquired 640 acres west side of town abt milepost 259 on Susquehanna River opposite current day intersectionof SR 627/SR 836 just south end Of US 20 @ present day location? From here on everything changed as Davis began buying lots right up until present day lol especially because prior to this there were few if any boundaries set up whatsoever like today you can drive straight down SR 627/SR 836 or go east/west etc.? WhenDavis got his hands on all 640 acres he realized how valuable our little corner would become so instead of selling it off quick like some folks did he decided to develop it slowly beginning by planting agriculture crops (& later raising livestock) then eventually founding businesses like grain elevator #2 & distillery #3 among others helping make our place better known today thanks mostly to Jacob Davis (& everyone involved within Penn Central Railroad Co.) who fought hard for us throughout our long journey!
