Plum was first settled in 1795 by John and Susannah Plum and their four children under the name of "Piney." It was renamed to Plum in 1800 after James A. Plum, who donated land for the town site. In 1812, John C. Smith opened up a small grocery store in what is now the core of plum and continued to operate it until his death in 1906. The first school in plum was built on the current site of the High School building in 1814 and operated for one year before closed due to lack of funds. The first post office opened on November 10, 1815 with Jno A Cook as its initial occupant and served until 1865 when it became part of Butler County. In 1919 local farmer Wm Hite donated land east of Main Street for what would become Plum Borough Park which still exists today as a parkland area with several baseball diamonds, two basketball courts, a swimming pool and more than thirty-six interpretive trails accessible from various points within or around it including three miles (5 km) of downtown Plum proper! Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the central region of Pennsylvania. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Erie metropolitan area. Plum was founded in 1798 by John Plum and his family. John's father, George Plum, had been a settler in what is now Plum and built the first home there. The town site was surveyed in 1802 and platted in 1807. In 1809, Edward Everett Bigelow began construction on what is now Fuller Mifflin printing shop which became one of the most important newspapers in America during its time as a leading paper manufacturer. The townsite was renamed for General James Kappenstaller (1803-1868), an American general who fought with distinction against Napoleonic France and Spain during the Mexican War and then served as United States Minister to Russia from 1862 to 1865. Kappenstaller's widow donated $5,000 to the town site in 1869 for development as a school district that would serve local students instead of sending them away to other districts in Altoona or Johnstown. The first school opened its doors on September 5, 1870. Today's high school campus occupies parts of buildings that were once used by First Presbyterian Church (now Good Shepherd United Methodist). The current mayor of Plum is Donny Schlosser with term beginning on January 1st 2019 until 2021
Plum, Pennsylvania was first settled in 1753 by John Plum. The town is named after a small, wild plum tree that grows in the area. The first courthouse was built in 1802 and it remains the only one remaining from that time. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1854 and became an unincorporated community within Plum in 1907. In 1926, the Borough of Plum merged with the neighboring towns of Whitehall and Johnstown to form what is now known as Johnstown-Plum Township. In 1948, the township split into two parts again when it joined with Whitehall Township to form what is now Lebanon Township. A post office called Plum was established in 1753, but no mail reached residents there until 1800. The first postmaster was James Hamilton. A store opened on Main Street near Presentation Road in 1802 and continued operating until 1865 when it closed due to economic difficulties. The first school open for students inside of Plum was erected on West Market Street near present day School House Road in 1814 by Mrs. Ann Wrightington and operated for three years before being discontinued because of low enrollment rates. A new school building constructed on School House Road between present day School House Road and Second Avenue opened for instruction on October 1st, 1825 under the name “Johnston Female Academy” which continued operation until May 25th of 1870 due to financial difficulties brought about by a changeover from open air classrooms to brick buildings inside of a medium sized factory during this time period
