Plum, Pennsylvania is a small city located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census and 2,009 at the 2010 census. Plum is an agricultural town with a focus on agriculture. Plum was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of the large porcupine factory complex known as Monaca Township. The township was created from parts of Cumberland Township and Quakertown Township in 1824. Union Academy was founded here in 1854 and later merged into University of Pittsburgh; both institutions are now part of the University of Pittsburgh System. In 1899, a post office called Westmoreland opened here; it closed in 1912. The Westmoreland coal mine closed in 1979 and most of the settlement around it has since been vacated or abandoned. However, some remains including two churches (Church of God United Methodist and First Presbyterian), two businesses (Southern Coal Company and American Fuel & Oil), several residences (most notably Plum's only remaining frame house dating to 1915), as well as evidence that corn cribs were used for planting crops remain today. Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Plum is home to the Plum Creek Dam and the Plum Creek Park Preserve. The first settler in Plum was Nicholas Paine who arrived in 1788. The next year, John Hays founded what would become Foxburg on the plain north of present-day Plum. In 1812, David Dixon erected a log cabin near what is now Dutch Elm Street in Plum. On October 9 of that year, Dixon became the first white man to set foot on what would later be called "Pennsylvania." In 1814 Samuel Colt settled in Dickinson Township and built a mill on Elk Horn Run which he named after his friend and mentor, Adam Clayton Smith from Philadelphia. In 1819 James Kline built another mill on Elk Horn Run; this one became known as Kline's Mills after him and it still stands today. By 1830, there were six mills operating in Plum including four by Jethro Gibbs and two by Nicholas Paine himself. In 1833, Daniel Webster set up shop at 715 Market Street in downtown plum with help from his father-in-law John Stevens (later governor of New York). Webster quickly gained a reputation for fairness and honesty as a legislator and during his term as congressman he fought successfully against corruption allegations leveled against him by then-Gov.-elect Andrew Johnson). In 1840 President 1840 James Buchanan ordered Ulysses S Grant to end Reconstruction proceedings in Alabama because he felt that African Americans were not contributing adequately to American society - this order led to race riots across America known as The Great Migration which began around 1850s AGO
In 1792, a group of thirteen farmers named Plum founded the town of Plum. The name comes from a small stream that they found near their farm. They named the stream after themselves and their location. In 1832, the town was renamed to Liberty Township due to the large influx of new settlers who were looking for a free government. When Pennsylvania statehood was granted in 1849, Liberty Township became part of Clearfield County. In 1907, Clearfield County merged with Franklin County to form Allegheny County. After World War II, Plum became an agricultural community and lost its status as a township. It was re-established as an independent municipality in 1984 and remains so today.
