Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. Plum is known for its plum pudding and cherry pie. The village has a post office and two churches: one Methodist, one Presbyterian. The first settlers in Plum were James and Elizabeth Glasson who arrived in 1792 from Maryland. They cleared land and built a log cabin near what is now the corner of Third Street and Elm Street. In 1823 John Hargrave settled here with his family on land that he had bought from David Dixon. He started a tannery which produced yarn for clothing and later also leather products. In 1828 James Harper built the first gristmill in Plum which ground corn to make flour, oats, beans,ammonia (a fertilizer), butterfat, cheese and other goods for local markets. By 1830 there were five gristmills in the village; three of them by Mr. Harper himself, one by Mr aserus Reynolds (HARPER ANDREW) & Sons (N/A - still standing). In 1853 Jno Ahern founded the Mutual Aid Society to provide relief to farmers during hard times caused by drought or natural disasters such as floods or fires. This society continues to this day as PASILANDUSA FOUNDATION OF COMMUNITY SERVICES INC.. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln visited Plum while on his way from Gettysburg to Philadelphia via Lancaster County He stopped at Hargrave's tannery before continuing on his journey It was not until after Lincoln's visit that Mrs Hargrave learned about her husband's association with politics In 1898 Isaac Asimovrewrote "Farewell my Lovely Home" about his experiences living in Plum while working as an editor at Galaxy Publications Inc., then moved there permanently when company merged with pulpits Review Press where he worked until his retirement in 1984
