Gun targets have been a part of Plum, Pennsylvania's history for many years. The first target was shot at the corner of Main and Elm Streets in 1859. A small cabin was built on this site and the first gunnery range was established there in 1865. The early guns were muzzleloaders, but soon after, artillery began to be used in Plum. The ranges were closed in 1898 because of prohibition, but they reopened a few years later under the name "Plum Arsenal". In 1903, a new range was built on Pine Street and it continued to be used until 1939. In 1906, Plum became an independent city and its own arsenal became available again. The ranges were still being used until 1955 when they were closed due to budget cuts. After that year, all guns except pistols were withdrawn from use at the Arsenal and all Target Practice facilities became open to the public. Today, Gun Targets is one of the oldest continuously operating rifle ranges in America with over 350 rifles available for shoot-outs including some that are over 100 years old! There are also pistol tournaments every week as well as matches between handguns and rifles which can get pretty fierce!

The first settler in Plum was James Hance who arrived in 1753. Hance and his family built a log cabin on the east side of Plum Creek near present-day Slaughtertown. plumsbury Township was organized on February 16, 1834 from parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. On December 4, 1881, it separated from plumsbury Township to form its own municipality. In 1913 the name of the town changed to Plum after General John Ewing'sPlum River Bridge over Big Branch Creek became known as "the Ewing Bridge". Beginning in 1865 there were numerous small uprisings against Union military occupation of Middle America during the American Civil War including: Battles of Monmouth Junction (1866), Shamokin Heights (1868), Perryville (1870), Shiloh (1871), White Sulphur Springs (1875), Petersburg Heights (1876) and Gettysburg National Military Park Expedition (1900). On September 12th 1861 Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union troops south of Washington Street () eastward along George Washington Boulevard (). Aftermath saw many skirmishes and battles between Confederate forces and Union troops across what would become Lancaster County; one such engagement occurred on October 15th when Confederate forces under Lt Col Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked a small detachment led by Captain Elijah Dickson at Bellefontaine Hill outside Lancaster City limits; this engagement resulted in two killed and five wounded before Confederate forces retreated without casualties In 1916 local farmer Jethro Gibbs set out to purchase an acreage extending into Plum from Lackawanna Coal Company owner James Wirtz for $10 per acre (); however he only received $5 for his land which he divided among his seven children. The area now includes much of downtown Plum as well as most of present day Slippery Rock Borough with some significant gaps still remaining within Plumm Township boundaries

The community was named for General James Plum, who served as an American Revolutionary War general and as the first mayor of Allegheny City. In 1827, John Bigelow opened a ferry service from Plum to point near what is now Point Breeze on the Monongahela River. This Provided easy access to coal mines in neighboring Westmoreland County and made Plum a vital trade center for both the region and Smithfield Township in Greensburg County. The town prospered until 1901 when strikes by miners and other factors destroyed much of their industry. Consequently, many people left Plum for more prosperous positions in nearby municipalities such as Greencastle or Mageeville during this time period. However, economic revival occurred again in recent years thanks to new manufacturing plants established within Plum by companies such as Motorola Solutions and Ford Motor Company (the current site of Local Motors). These businesses have helped revive local economy which has seen some modest growth over the past few decades; however, due to its limited transportation options it remains a relatively small town with limited opportunities for economic development outside of agriculture or services related to agriculture

By 1810, the population had decreased to about 50 residents. In 1821, the United States census listed Plum with a population of 21 residents. In 1830, Plum had a population of 36 residents. In 1840, Plum had a population of 54 residents. In 1849, Plum's post office was closed and its citizens moved to nearby Parkersburg. However, by 1860, Plum still possessed a ZIP code: 15656.
