Plum, Pennsylvania is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. Plum is the smallest of the seven towns in Lackawanna County. It has a small downtown core that resembles rural central casting from an old Western movie and a large agricultural area surrounding it. The history of Plum goes back to 1782 when Captain John Nevin purchased land in what is now Plum from the Seneca Indians. He named his new settlement after his daughter (or niece) Plumsweet who had been born there about 16 years earlier. In 1812, Captain Nevin's son-in-law built a log cabin on what is now State Route 376 near present-day Elmira Park to serve as the first post office in Plum. It was called "Nevinia" until 1824 when it was renamed "Plum". When the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, trade between Buffalo and Pittsburgh increased so much that Nevin decided to move his post office to Buffalo so he could be closer to his customers and sell merchandise direct rather than through agents. By 1830, plum had three stores and two blacksmiths; however, by 1840 only one store remained due to competition from other local businesses such as breweries and tanneries which were opening up around Buffalo at this time. In 1847 William Dent bought land northeast of present day Elmira Park for $1125 which became known as Dentville because he donated all of its acreage for public school purposes within 10 years thereafter (the school district boundaries have since changed). The first church in Plum was built on what is currently State Route 376 south of Elmira Park during this time too – Saint Vincent's Episcopal Church which opened its doors on November 5th,. In 1850 Samuel Metzger acquired 640 acres east of present day Elmira Park which became known as Metzgerstown because he donated it for public road use within 10 years thereafter (the road has since been named Metzger Street). The first home built there – also known as OldMetzGERSTOWN – was called “NewMetzGERSTOWN” until 1863 when it became known as “MetzGERSTOWN” again due to Henry Asbury’s donation of an additional 160 acres immediately east thereof . . . In 1865 Isaac Harnett founded Harnett & Company Limited with 8 employees making shoeshine using horse power; later expanding into other retail branches including groceries/chocolate etc., but failed twice during bankruptcy court cases brought against him by creditors stretching back over 25 years each! In 1903 Hardesty Manufacturing Company Incorporated leased 1/2 acre north side of Main Street from Asbury Bequest Trustees for production of candy bars under the name Hardesty's Candy Company Ltd.; however just 2 years later they were forced out by patent infringement allegations brought against them by some major candy companies who thought they were taking their business underground! In 1911 Maple Leaf Tobacco Company leased 3/4 acre along Cherry Street from Asbury Bequest Trustees for manufacturing cigarettes under the name Maple Leaf Cigarette Corporation Ltd.; however just 3 months later they were forced out by patent infringement allegations brought against them by some major tobacco companies who thought they were taking their business underground! Finally On July 20th 1912 Wm Kapp organised a meeting at Community Hall where residents voted unanimously To form A Town Board!!!
