Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town in the southern tier of Pennsylvania located within the Huntingdon Valley region. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. Plum is one of 14 townships in Butler County and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The two largest employers in Plum are Albertsons Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The first settler to arrive in what is now Plum was Nicholas Boudreau on July 4, 1798. He brought with him his family and four cows, which he named "Boudreau." Today, most people think that name comes from Pierre-Jacques Boudreau who was a Frenchman who settled along the Susquehanna River in present-day Lancaster County in 1784. There are no records to support this claim but it's an interesting story nonetheless! In 1822, Daniel Gassaway bought 640 acres (240 ha) of land near what is now Plum from Nicholas Boudreau for $2 per acre ($40 per ha). At that time, land went for about $1 per acre (0.50 per ha). Gassaway named his new estate "Plum" after the town he had just left behind in France where he had been born and died some years earlier. From 1822 until 1825, plum was underdeveloped because there were not many people living there because farming was not a popular activity at that time due to difficult weather conditions and lack of available resources such as water or land. However, when George Stephenson built the Erie Canal through central PA in 1830s, business boomed because people could Now travel easily to cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore without having to go upriver all the way! In 1836 James Waddell platted lands around what is now Plum including parts of today's Butler County for £2 per acre ($60 per ha). This allowed farmers to sell their product directly to consumers instead of going through middlemen like Ebenezer Burnham did before! Because Waddell platted these areas specifically for farming purposes rather than developing them further or selling them off piecemeal over time like other developers did before, Plum remained an undeveloped community until after World War II when development began anew throughout much of central PA!

Plum is located on the banks of the Lackawanna River. Plum is one of two towns in Lackawanna County that were founded before 1800. The other town, Scranton, became an incorporated municipality in 1856. Plum was initially named for John Plummer, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1789 to 1794 and captain of militia under George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1825, James Kieft donated land to build a Methodist church in Plum. That same year saw the first schoolhouse built in Plum - a log cabin called "The Primitive". In 1830, John Aitken donated land to build a cemetery for local farmers and their families. That same year also saw the opening of what would become known as "The Kieft Store", which served as both store and post office until 1918 when it became known as "The Penny Arcade". In 1847-48, citizens constructed a wooden bridge over the Lackawanna River (now called SR 740) which connected Plum with Scranton. The bridge was destroyed by flooding in 1951 but was reconstructed following its reopening on July 10th that same year by then-Lackawanna County Executive Harry Jaffe Jr.. In 1860, James Kieft donated land to create what would become known as "Kieft Park." The park includes plaques commemorating various events from pioneer history to local varieties of apples grown there today. In 1926-27, locals installed an electric light system at "The Primitive" which still serves as part of town's downtownscape today!
