The town was founded in 1725 by James Logan and named for his daughter Pamela ( = "plum"). In 1728, the original plat map described as "a small place about thirty rods square containing three houses" consisted of just one house and two squads of five cows. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,719 people, 1,521 households, and 986 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,351/mi² (853/km²). There were 1,653 housing units at an average density of 814/mi² (269/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98% White alone; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; <0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 1%. There were 1,521 households out of which 38% had children underthe age OF 18 living with them,[2] 62% were married couples living together,[3] 11% had a female householder with no husband present,[4] and 23%, non-families boarded with family members during the year. Plum is one of two towns in Butler County and was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Forbes. The town was named after Sir William Plum (1676-1746), an Englishman who settled near Philadelphia and became a wealthy landowner. In 1802, the town incorporated as a village. In 1922, Plum merged with neighboring Ridley Township to form a new township. As of the 2010 census, there were 8,651 people living in Plum Borough and 2,611 residents living in Ridley Township. The community is home to many interesting historical moments including being the birthplace of General George Washington and President James K. Polk; it also contains some beautiful architecture such as the historic First Presbyterian Church which was built between 1868 and 1870. TheCaptain Cook House Museum is also located within the community and tells about what life must have been like for sailors on Plum Island during their time spent there during Captain Cook's tenure as head chef for HM ships HMS Discovery (later HMS Terror)and HMS Eudoxia (later HMS Effingham.) There are also several shops situated throughout town that offer local produce or items related to local history such as old coins or buttons from pre-war days!
