This company operated until 1935, when it was merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company Inc. The plum plant manufactured rifles, shotguns, handguns and ammo for both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. It also produced ordnance items such as cannons and mortars. During World War II, Plum was home to two additional firearms factories—one run by Colt Firearms Corporation and one managed by Hughes Guns Company—both of which churned out weapons for various Allied allies including America's military forces abroad. Additionally, Plum served as a training ground for U.S.-made servicemen during World War II; various armories there were used to manufacture ammunition such as 60-millimeter mortar rounds and Army Hand grenades

In recent decades, Plum has become increasingly popular among retirees drawn to its quiet lifestyle and abundant natural resources such as timberland, coal mining operations (both open-pit and underground), water rights pooling properties (including 3 dams), lakeshore access, hiking trails and golf courses available for public use.
