Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is within the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area. Plum's history dates back to 1793 when two brothers, Nicholas and David Plum were granted 260 acres (120 hectares) of land by Governor George Washington in order to establish a new township. The first settler in Plum was Samuel Bowers who arrived in December of that year with his family from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1814 he married Sarah Rector and they became the parents of six children: William H., Mary E., Daniel W., Esther A., and John F. In 1826, James Cranch purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land from Nicholas Plum for $4 per acre ($40 / ha). This allowed him to build what is now known as Princeton Township into an important community with a mill, storehouses, school and other infrastructure which remain today. By 1830 there were over 150 people living in Princeton Township including twenty-six farmers and their families. The Panic of 1837 hit Plum hard as many farms went bankrupt due to lack of money or bad weather patterns caused by the American Civil War efforts of President Andrew Johnson. However, through hard work and determination residents rebuilt their homes and businesses after reconstruction began in earnest on October 15th, 1847 with local officials inauguration ceremonies taking place on November 3rd under the leadership of Judge John Goudreau Jr.. The town's rebirth was short-lived however as it lost its charter due to financial problems following the war while other communities such as Hazleton took advantage of their charters granting them more autonomy. However by 1860 Plum had recovered enough its charter status resumed operations but encountered another crisis when Joshua Barney leased 4500 acres (1600 hectares) adjoining Princeton Township for sheep farming purposes without giving away any title deeds or creating any economic development plans for the area which led to tension between Barney and his neighbors culminating with aiery fists being drawn during a public meeting on July 2nd 1861 at which time Barney announced he would sell all his land east of Route 422 for $8000 dollars only to have his offer retracted weeks later when objections arose from some members of Congress who felt that this would encourage others not to settle near Philadelphia because they would be able to get terms better than those offered by Barney. This event helped spark controversy surrounding township charters throughout much rural America until finally receiving recognition from the United States Supreme Court in McIntyre v.(1875). After years of debate over whether or not Plum should lose its charter due its poor economy or maintain it despite these controversies it regained its charter status on January 1st 1898 becoming one of only four townships statewide then characterized as “small” having no less than 10 thousand inhabitants instead Of this number about 60% are still living within property lines today making plum one OF THE most intact communities left within our Nation’s capital cityscape!

Many residents are engaged in farming or manufacturing although there is also some commercial development in the area such as the construction of a new high school complex. Plum was once known for its highly fertile land which yielded excellent crops such as potatoes, corn, apples, bananas, tomatoes and wheat. Today much of the agricultural production takes place within close proximity to urban areas where access to reliable water sources is often more limited than in earlier times. The town also manufactures goods such as clothing and home items utilizing local resources like wood or metal fabrication tools or fiberglass production methods.
