However, during World War II whenKnives were often used for combat purposes (e.g., knives used by pilots), demand decreased significantly becauseknives were not considered essential equipment anymore. Pittsburgh was founded on July 7, 1733 by General George Washington and his troops after they destroyed Fort Duquesne in what is now downtown Pittsburgh. At the time, this was one of the largest Army outposts west of New York City. After defeating Native Americans at Battle of Monongahela near modern-day Oakland, Pennsylvania Governor John Forbes issued a proclamation welcoming Washington’s forces. Washington named the city Pittsburg because it had been abandoned by British settlers during King George II’s War (1755-1763). He also wanted to show support for American revolutionaries who were fighting against British rule. In 1753, when France became involved in the Revolutionary War (against Great Britain), Pittsburgans quickly sided with America. In order to ensure French neutrality during this conflict, Pittsburgans built Fort Duquesne which guarded their city against possible attack from Canada or France. The fort served as a symbol ofPittsburgh’s allegiance to America throughout the war and helped make it one of America’s largest military strongholds at times. In 1814–1815, during Andrew Jackson’s presidency, Pittsburgans helped buildFort Donelson near Chattanooga Tennessee as part of efforts to protect East Tennessee from Spanish control following Mexico’s victory over Spain at Adobe Walls.(1) Pittsburgh also played an important role in American Reconstruction following World War II (1939-1945). After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 – triggering World War II – President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all U.S.-based companies east of Mississippi be closed within two weeks so that they could be reorganized into civilian Handsome Ring companies under UAW management.(2) This move signaledPittsburgh’s importance insideofthe United States as well as its readiness for postwar reconstruction efforts.(3) During these years there were many high-profile events taking place Downtown including: The opening day parade organized by Mayor Edward Brown on October 15th 1942;(4) The dedication ceremonies for the new Carnegie Library on May 25th 1944;(5) President Harry Truman's visit to Pittsburgh on January 8th 1945;(6) The first National Football League game played at Heinz Field between Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Eagles on September 26th 1947;(7) The groundbreaking ceremony for Third Avenue between Kulpico Boulevard and Elmira Road on November 12th 1951;and finally(8)/the construction of Steelworkers Memorial Coliseum which opened August 3rd 1955
