Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the largest city in that state. The population was 515,769 as of 2010. It is also the most populous municipality within Pittsburgh metropolitan area and one of the ten most populous cities in Pennsylvania. The region now known as Allegheny County was part of Westmoreland County until 1795, when it became part of Pennsylvania because of its proximity to Philadelphia. As a result, Pittsburgh has been known throughout its history as "The City of Brotherly Love." In 1814, James K. Polk founded what would become Pittsburgh as a commercial center on the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny riverside. Over time, other businesses followed suit andPittsburgh emerged as an important industrial center with major companies such as Carnegie Steel Company (1862), Duquesne Brewery (1902), Mellon Bank (1937), PPG Industries (2007) and United States Steel Corporation (1986). In 1907, both Pittsburgh's congressional district and all but two counties in western Pennsylvanian were created from parts of Allegheny County by then- Congressman John Kerr Scott along with help from then-Senator David Wickersham – making Pittsburgh one of only three American cities to have both congressional districts and all but two counties at once – during his first term in office after becoming Speaker pro tempore in 1906. Most holster designers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania began their work during the 1800s. In 1824, John B. Hays patented a design for a revolver holster that became known as the "Hays Holster." By 1847, Philadelphia-based manufacturer A.T. and W.H. Colt had begun manufacturing revolvers in Pittsburgh and needed to find a holster company to produce their weapons in-house. Erie County forms Pittsburgh's southwestern border with Commonweal County to its east and north, while Allegheny County forms its eastern border with Armstrong County to its west. The history of Pittsburgh can be traced back to 1759 when British soldiers burned down the old Fort Pitt on behalf of General George Washington in what is now known as Independence Hall. On July 4, 1827, Pittsburgh became an incorporated town under a charter from Governor John Murray. In 1846, following Mexican American War hostilities that flared near town limits and also saw skirmishes between American and Mexican forces over grazing rights on Native American land, Pittsburgh adopted a pro-American stance which helped make it one of the many cities to ratify the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo two years later. From 1861 until 1865, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Pittsburgh was occupied by Confederate troops who pillaged and burned much of downtown before surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. After Reconstruction followed by a period of social unrest which ended with Federal rule over urban areas beginning in 1876, technology drove economic growth for both residents and businesses throughout what would become known as "The Steel City." Many new skyscrapers were constructed during this time including One Mellon Plaza (now One Franklin Street)and Art Deco styles characterized much of downtown area today including CONSOL Energy Center (now Consol Energy Company Tower), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport (now Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum), Heinz Brewery corporate campus expansion project located along Forbes Avenue - now home to Allendale High School - and several other major business ventures that continue through present day such as Googleplex (later Google Inc.) across Schuylkill River from Downtown; Penn NorthSTAR power plant providing clean energy for tens of thousands homes throughout Western PA; The University atPittsburgh's School of Medicine located atop Sixty MinutesNorthwest corner Third Ave./University Boulevard NW; Carnegie Mellon University's main campus spread out across several hills just outside downtown (~10 miles away); numerous parksland properties within easy walking distance including Frick Park,, Lawndale Neighborhoods developments adjacent to South Side...the list goes on! Despite these successes there have been periodic fluctuations in Pittsburgh's economy due largely to factors such as oil production declines/increases or global recession effects...but overall they have managed to maintain some level stability despite rapidly changing demographics around them!
