Phoenixville is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in Lackawanna County and is part of the Reading Area. The population was 8,471 as of the 2010 census. Phoenixville was founded on October 3, 1784 by General George Washington and his troops during their march from Newburgh to Trenton. The first post office in Phoenixville was established on December 2, 1786. The name for the town came from Mount Pleasant which lay just outside its boundaries at that time. The original stores in Phoenixville were grocery stores and general merchandise businesses which began to open up around 1820-1821 when the first railroad reached Phoenixville by way of Bethlehem, PA. By 1829 there were six stores operating in Phoenixville with a population of about 100 people each. In 1837 or 1840, developers started to build what would become the now famous "Old City" district of Phoenixville which included present day downtown and most of today's east side including Bothwell Road and State Street extending into Bethlehem Township (now Westmoreland Township). The construction began soon after new streets were laid out through difficult terrain and it took many years before all development within what is now known as "Old City" had taken place - primarily because no one wanted to live near churches or other important landmarks then! At some point between 1855-1857 an act was passed providing for primary election elections to be held every three years instead of annually like they are currently conducted; this led to major change in how local government functioned with citizens no longer having to stay on top of things if something changed at the state level that they didn't want seen happen! In 1860 a school (later renamed Western School) replaced an earlier structure which served as a courthouse until 1861 when it burned down along with most other buildings associated with Frontier Academy (now Western Pennsylvania University). Afterburners destroyed much property within Old City so Reconstruction efforts got underway immediately with plans rapidly progressing for new structures due westward towards Bethlehem township whereupon Cherokee Trail Indian School opened in 1868 providing instruction for white children only until eventually both schools were closed due to lack funding following World War II! Today remnants can still be found scattered throughout both sides of State Street from Carpenter Road southward past Allendale Drive all the way northwesterly past US 11 while homes older than 1925 still stand overlooking Interstate 81/79 across Uptown Park looking west!
