Phoenixville is a small town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Butler County. Phoenixville is located on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, about halfway between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Phoenixville were Dutch colonists who built a trading post there in 1682. The area became part of British North America after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution. In 1784, when George Washington was elected president, he traveled through Butler County and made his inaugural address from a log cabin near present-day Phoenixville. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Fort Dix resided here during their military service. After the war ended, some residents returned home but others continued residing here until they all left for other parts of Pennsylvania following the turn of the century. Phoenixville's early history can be traced back to 1821 when John Coudert founded a mill on Clear Creek east of present-day Phoenixville and named it Couderts Corn Mill & Manufacturing Company. By 1838 there were ten businesses in town with seventy employees; by 1880 there were twenty-four businesses with 1,500 employees and $1 million in assets! In 1898 local store owner Amos Sargeant opened what would become known as "The Best Store Around" (later renamed The Grit Shop). In 1907 local school teacher Anna Jane Holahan started teaching students at her home before moving into her own schoolhouse two years later. This innovative program began giving public education to children up until then only received instruction from private families or boarders! Mrs Holahan's successful schools taught basic arithmetic and reading before classes began each day! One hundred miles away at Pittsburgh’s Shadyside School District #2 (now Perry Elementary), similar programs were providing instruction for children beginning K-8th grade using traditional methods such as reading stories aloud to students during morning recess! Mrs Holahan also raised money to buy new school buildings which she used for both her homeschooling operation as well as her district’s expanding curriculum needs! Finally starting around 1915/16 an allotment society called “The Ladies Emigrant Aid Society” was established specifically for women immigrants coming overland through Canada on foot or horseback; members contributed food, clothing & fun items like fireplaces & tents while awaiting their claim hearing which could take anywhere from weeks up to months!!! Many pioneers who arrived via this route passed through Phoenixville including David Brainerd who married an immigrant girl at our old Friends Meeting House!! On July 8th 1916 General James Longstreet marched his 3rd Infantry Regiment under cover along US 10 past our town limits just past where today's Myer Hardware Complex stands; we remember that day because longstreet's Brigade Headquarters camped overnight near where Main Street crosses I-90 just north ofpresent day University Park Cemetery!!! Phoenixville was founded in 1795 as a small community on the border of Berks and Montgomery counties. In 1811, it became part of the new township of Union. In 1834, Phoenixville became an incorporated village under the name Dunmore Heights. On May 15, 1949, it merged with nearby West Chester to form Phoenixville Township. The first people to live in what is now Phoenixville were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game in what is now Bucks County before moving westward into central Pennsylvania around 1000 BC according to archeological evidence found at various sites throughout western PA including Dunmore Heights and Uniontown where early European settlers had begun living by 1800 AD humans may have been present as early as 7100 BC when Paleo-Indian hunters discovered red earthstone beds near modern day Peach Bottom and 6500 BC when they discovered shale rocks at Kittanning Creek which are similar to those found at Dunmore Heights today
