Phoenixville is a small town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The community began as a small farming village located on the banks of the Schuylkill River in what is now Phoenixville Township, Fayette County. On November 3, 1854, a group of men and boys from nearby Whitehalltown founded Phoenixville as a Christian school for boys. They named it after St. Johnsbury (now Burlington), Vermont. In 1865, they built a log cabin to serve as their first schoolhouse and soon other businesses were established in what is today the downtown core of Phoenixville. In 1868-9, when surveyors explored southern Montgomery County for lands to be taken up for public land grants, they found that there was no suitable spot for an agricultural village on the Schuylkill Riverbank and recommended instead thatPhoenixville be moved to new territory near Camden Junction on Delaware Street just east of present-day West Conshohocken Township . This recommendation was accepted by the county commissioners and on July 1, 1870 - less than one year after its founding - Phoenixville became official property of Montgomery County . The first post office opened in Phoenixville on October 16th 1871 under the name "Marion". The name change came about because William Haddon established an insurance business there which used "Marion" as its mailing address until 1893 when he changed it to "Phoenixville". A store and hotel were built along present day Market Street SE in 1886-87 by George Fenton Jr., who had also started another insurance company there earlier that same year with similar naming rights; this joint venture formed what would become known as “the Fenton Hotel” which still stands today across from Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company offices building). By 1889 there were also two churches – Christ Episcopal Church (founded 1865) and First Presbyterian Church (founded 1876). A cotton gin operated by John Waddell was also erected here during this time period but it ceased production in 1901 due to overloading caused by increased demand for raw cotton withinPhiladelphia at that time. The commercial success of these early businesses led to more schools being built: Bethlehem Baptist School (1886), Holy Name School (1889), Allentown Academy (1892), Stonington School (1904) – all now defunct but their associated buildings still standing including Our Lady Of Lourdes Elementary School adjacent thereto – Angelicum Catholic High School(1909), Sacred Heart Episcopal High School(1915) – both closed down several years ago – Central Catholic High School(1925) & St Joseph’s College Prepatory Center(1964). Some residents even prospered beyond high school into professional lives such as John Pyle who became nationallyknown attorney general under President Franklin D Roosevelt before dying suddenly aged 93at his home three days after inauguration following numerous successful legal cases won during his term; Harry Noller who founded our current largest paper manufacturer followed suit later becoming president/CEO/chief operating officer* (*Noller left his post effective January 1st 2009 having served since December 2006.) Many residents chose not to attend college or pursue careers outside their homes instead turning their attention towards creating manufacturing jobs typical in those days such as electricians or plumbers while others continued attending college through various programs like night classes or correspondence courses offered through private institutions such as Bryn Mawr College or Temple University. Phoenixville is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in York County by population and has been growing since it was founded in 1792. The area now comprising Phoenixville was first settled by Germans in the early 18th century as part of the Susquehanna Valley region. In 1792, John Butler erected a small log cabin on the present site of Phoenixville to provide shelter for his family during winter months. By 1800, there were twelve families residing in Phoenixville and three stores were open. In 1814, William Penn granted land to James Butler and others for a town site. The first settler arrived in April of that year with his wife and children from Lancaster County. They named their new town "Phoenixville" after the city of Philadelphia which they had just returned from visitations. The village rapidly grew due to its location near two major rivers –the Susquehanna River and the Monongahela River –and its convenient transportation links via horse/carriage road and canal system. By 1830, Phoenixville boasted six houses and ten businesses including one grocery store. The building of the Erie Canal (in 1825) brought more industry to Phoenixville along with new settlers who began farming cotton plantations east of downtown into what is now Perry Township (which became part of York County on September 15, 1795). With increasing population growth came an increase in housing needs which led to construction of several brick churches between 1830-1850 including Sts Peter's Episcopal Church (founded December 4, 1830), Christmastime services at Trinity Episcopal Church (founded December 25, 1830), German Evangelical Lutheran Church ( founded January 5th 1840), First Presbyterian Church (forerunner to Presbyterian Cathedral) (founded February 1st 1840) and BaptistChurch #1 organized May 10th 1850; all these churches are still standing today within their original boundaries despite numerous alterations or additions over time! A millinery shop opened up on Walnut Street adjacent to Second Presbyterian Church about 1840 which continued until 1865 when it closed because competition from larger mercantile operators made spinning outwind too difficult without power tools or large housings for workers; this mill also remain extant today as a contributing property to local history museum . In 1855-1857 there was an attempt by management at Pittsburgh's Point State Bank located nearby while still under construction not long after opening called for employees across town wearing masks with each person responsible for saving any valuable items they could find before being taken away by bank robbers who stole whatever they managed t o grab before leaving - this event is generally recognized as proto-bank robbery modern day fashion! Finally authorized access was given inside banks starting around 1860 providing greatly increased security but no change occurred thereafter leading some peopleTo feel that things may have actually gotten worse since then !! The original community consisted of only a few homes and was located near the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Philadelphia Creek. In 1829, Phoenixville became an official borough within Philadelphia County. The following year saw another growth period for Phoenixville as businesses started to arrive and residents began to build their own homes. By 1830, Phoenixville had become an established community with a population of around 350 people. In 1834,Phoenixville merged with neighboring towns Huntingdon and Radnor to form a larger city known as Reading Township. Throughout its history, Phoenixville has been an important center for trade and commerce in Pennsylvania. Today, it is still home to many businesses and banks that continue to support local economy. Additionally,Phoenixville has played host to numerous cultural events throughout its history including concerts, festivals and presentations from major dignitaries such as Presidents George Washington Carver and Franklin D Roosevelt.
