In 1795, John Armstrong built his first store in what is now downtownPhoenixville. Armstrong was one of the earliest business owners in what would become PhoenixVILLE. The early years of settlement were difficult due to harsh weather conditions and long journey times by wagon or horseback across North America. But eventually, many businesses popped up and people started living and working together on farms and ranches throughout western Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1892 it had a population of 20,000 and began to attract high-paying jobs with its proximity to booming railroads and industries like foundry work at nearby Bethlehem Steel Plant and printing plants run by Goudey Brothers & Company Incorporated. By 1920 Phoenixville boasted 130 businesses employing over 4500 people with an annual payroll of $27 million dollars However during World War II when steel production soared due to wartime needs for munitions, Phoenixville lost many jobs along with much of its residential development because companies shifted their production to other factories across the country. However since then some new businesses have started up such as metal fabricating company Harken Industries which has employed many locals over the years including current Mayor Craig Senter Despite these setbacks however things are slowly starting to change with increasing investment into infrastructure such as new schools and more housing developments that can accommodate commuters coming into town from surrounding suburbs such as West Chester or South Philly
