Phoenixville is a town in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settler in Phoenixville was George Washington Smith, who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on the east side of what is now bend Street. In 1817, John Pemberton bought land from George Washington Smith and began to build a gristmill on what is now Waverly Road. Pemberton's mill produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to New York City and otherparts of the Northeast. By 1825, Pemberton had added a sawmill to his mill complex which manufactured plank flooring for churches and other public buildings in western Pennsylvania. In 1827, he sold his business interests in Phoenixville to James Fenton Jr.. A year later, Fenton married Eliza Ann Brouwer and bought another farm west of town which he called "Brouwer's Grove". They raised pigs, cows, horses and chickens there until their death in 1889 when it was donated to Phoenixville Institute for educational purposes by their widow Lucy Brouwer Fenton (1872-1953). In 1861 when Congress created Dauphin County, most of present-dayPhoenixville were included within its boundaries as well as parts of Bellefonte Township (now Montgomery County) east of Lebanon Valley Creek. However much of northwest Phoenixvillage lay within Cumberland Township (now Berks County), where Joseph Pennoyer had settled before 1800 along the Susquehanna River about south-southeast ofPhiladelphia proper. Pennoyer operated a ferry service across that stream between Bellefonte Landing on the river bank northwest ofPhoenixvillage and Allentown on Main Street near modern day Bethlehem Steel Company headquarters until about 1870; thereafter only ferries continued across Beaverdam Creek which formsthe border between Cumberland Townshipand Phoenixvillage today. In 1865 John Scranton organized an agricultural society heretofore unknown but presumed to be representativeof whatever community or village may have been established nearby around Scranton's home atwhat is now Spring Mill Road opposite Union Depot - this earlyScranton settlement would later become known as Friendship Heights after him &his wife Anna Maria Scranton moved there circa 1886 &established her family grocery store (& adjacent post office) just off SpringMill Rd.-Friendship Heights served primarilyas an agricultural center with goods brought overriverby boatportwise from Philadelphia via Trenton & Princeton Junction etc., untilrare industrial development developed here during Prohibition era although Scranton stillheld considerable civic&political power locally thru many years subsequent theretountil his death suddenly & unexpectedly prior to 1980 4th Ward Borough Council election CycleNote: all numbers current as OFTEN reported by PA Historical Commission staff; occasional errors may occur

Phoenixville is a town in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest community in Monroe County and the second-largest community in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia. Phoenixville owes its name to John Fenton, who purchased land here in 1798. The first settler on this land was Nicholas Whitehead. He and his family arrived from England in 1798 and started a farmstead on what is now Main Street. In 1824, John Fenton bought much of this same land from Nicholas Whitehead for $1,000 cash. This purchase changed Phoenixville's course: it became one of the most important towns in early Monroeville Township because it served as a transportation hub for goods moving between Erie and Philadelphia counties. Fenton's store became known as "The Girdle" because it was one of the earliest stores to open up in this area. The town quickly grew into a thriving center for trade and commerce with businesses such as grocery stores, clothiers, wagonmakers, sawmills/grinding mills and more opening up over time. One of the most significant moments during Phoenixville's history came when steel production began to take off nearby atricktown (now Allentown). Steelworkers poured their molten steel down main Street into large cauldrons called puddles until 1903 when an escape tube allowed them to cool without having their coals fall on their heads! This event helped spur continued development around downtown Phoenixville which included new churches and schools; many people refer to downtown Phoenixville today as "the birthplace of Allentown". In 1958, Mayor Joseph Hirschhorn announced thatPhoenixville would become home to Penn State University – making it possible for many families who had long been looking for an opportunity to send their children to college close by! From that day forward, students from all over Pennsylvania flocked here for PSUYP examinations which occurred every autumn since then! Today PSUYP remains one of the biggest events throughout town calendar - witness history today at our old High School building located just east of Main Street!
Phoenixville was originally settled by Welsh immigrants in 1795. The town was incorporated in 1831 and became the county seat of Duquesne County. Phoenixville had a population of about 25,000 in 1870 and about 100,000 by 1900. It declined during the 20th century but has since regained some of its former prominence as an agricultural center and bedroom community for Pittsburgh.
