The area around present-day Phoenixville was first inhabited by Native American tribes who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits there for their own subsistence purposes. In 1681, General John Forbes laid out a grants system for land grantees in what is now Clearfield Township west of Philadelphia as part of his lands grants policy designed to encourage settlement and reduce Indian influence within certain areas of Pennsylvania. One group that got their start here were farmers known as "Scotchmen." In 1824, James Fenton purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) northeast of Phoenixville from Colonel John Forbes for $2 per acre ($0.50 per square mile). This large tract became known as Fenton's Farm which stretched all along what are now High Street and Park Boulevard east to north Main Street; it included most of what becomes today’s Phoenixville Center neighborhood on both sides of High Street between Park Boulevard and First Avenue East). At that time it consisted mostly of woods with a few houses scattered among them; today much has changed about its location due to development over the years including some building approvals taking place on or near its original boundaries! Fenton set up shop farming Produce until 1830 when he sold off his holdings to Abraham Simpson who had also bought land around Newtown Square in 1825 at an approximate cost of $6 peracre ($0.60 per square mile). Simpson developed what would become Meadowlands – a large agricultural basin consisting almost entirely farmland – which surrounded present day Phoenixville Center starting about 1830 with some buildings built there such as a sawmill (now demolished), gristmill (now demolished), post office (now replaced by condominiums), jail (closed 1985) and Temperance Hall/ movie theater complex begun about 1840 on Third Avenue East just southwest corner Third Avenue West frompresent day Fourth Avenue East school bus stop). In 1847 Frederick Pillsbury bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) adjacent to Fenton’s farm making him oneofthe largest landowners in centralPA at that time representing more than halfof all PA property owners owning over 100,000 acres (.50 sq mi)). He began developing this land into Springfield Township beginning about 1850 with additionstowhat are now Fifth Avenue Southbound and Seventh StreetWest including present-day Northwest corner Arlington DriveSouthwest fromThird Avenue East ).
