The name of the original incorporated village (later renamed Phoenixville) may be derived from Welsh "Penzance" meaning "place of peace." In 1892, Phoenixville became one of four towns within Snyder County that were consolidated into the new borough of Pittsburgh. The consolidation caused some local businesses to close but also created more job opportunities for residents who had previously been living in scattered rural villages around the county seat. The community's growth has been due to two factors: its location near major transportation infrastructure and its proximity to steel mills that turned out radios, autos, phonographs and other equipment used by American industry during World War II. The city's primary industries have since relocated or disappeared but along with them many early settlers - most notably prominent brothers Joseph and John Pyle - who continue an important presence in the community today. Phoenixville is part of the Reading Area and is home to many local businesses and organizations. The first residents of Phoenixville were Native American settlers who arrived around 1800. They engaged in hunting, fishing, and trading with other tribes in the area. By 1827, most of the original inhabitants had moved away for fear of an Apache-led attack which never happened. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, potatoes, sugar beets, apples, grapes (from nearby Doylestown), and other crops on their homesteads near what is now Main Street. In 1839-40 when a new line was built west from Philadelphia along Route 11 to Yorktown Township (now West Allis), some Phoenixvillians decided to move there because they thought it would be more convenient than staying where they were. In 1861 when Gettysburg was fought and America’s destiny was decided as Union or Confederate forces battled each other across Pennsylvania frontiers during the Civil War, many people living in Yorktown Township went into hiding due to fears that Confederate General Robert Ewell might attack them if he learned they supported the Union side. A few weeks later however when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Gettysburg instead (!), most of these people returned to their homes and lived through one of history’s greatest battles without ever knowing all about it! This victory by Robert Ewell against General Jubal Early helped put an end to sectionalism in America so that everyone could live together without fear of another war breaking out between different regions or groups of people! In 1865 after the Civil War ended there were still some Phoenixvillians who wanted to stay put but because some land had been ceded back to Lancaster County by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Reconstruction efforts – this made moving anywhere very difficult for them since not everyone wanted their property given back so easily! So eventually most of these people moved away again until there were just a handful left living hereabouts today including our own Mayor Bob Sprague! One reason why we have such strong community ties here are all our family members have come from eitherPittsburgh or Valley Forge; my great grandparents came over while my father served in Vietnam! My dad’s sister also married a Pittsburgher so I can think I am pretty close too 😂😂
