The first permanent settler in Phoenixville was Nicholas Henshaw, who arrived around 1796 and erected a log cabin on a small stream called Bald Eagle Run. He named his new community after his home town of Phoenixville, Ontario, Canada. In 1812, Daniel Boone discovered copper near where Phoenixville now stands and decided to establish a mining camp there. By 1817, several other mine owners had followed Boone's lead and established mines in or near Phoenixville. Over time, many families from different parts of the United States came to live in or adjacent to Phoenixville. Among these settlers were those who founded Scranton and Wilkes-Barre along the Susquehanna River; millers from Lancaster County; farmers from Berks County; mechanics from Philadelphia; artisans from Bethlehem; andavers from Dauphin County. Over time, also sprang up businesses such as mills (such as Lamp & Wesson) and stores (Fenway & Company). One important event that took place within the community during this time period was the Battle of Plum Creek which occurred on September 26th 1865 between Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee and Union troops commanded by Colonel Nathaniel Pomeroy over an issue involving grazing rights on private property east of Strawberry Plains Road in present-day Whitehall Township section 6A-6G-7P-8R-9E
Phoenixville was founded in 1795 as a small farming village on the west side of the Monongahela River. It grew rapidly during the 18th century, thanks to its location on a major transportation route, and by 1800 it had reached its peak population of around 1,000 people. However, economic development slowed during the 19th century due to changes in British Columbia and American Indian land ownership. In 1902, Phoenixville amalgamated with neighboring villages of Easton and Whitehall to form what is now known as downtown Phoenixville.
