The history of gun sights in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania goes back to at least 1824. At that time, the city was home to a number of shooting clubs and ranges, and it was decided that guns should be aimed at specific targets in order to improve accuracy. One such range was the Old Gunnery School on Broad Street. The first sights were designed by two Belgian engineers, Auguste Janin and André-Jacques Conte, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1824. They designed a pair of iron sights that could be mounted on either side of a rifle barrel. The earliest known example of these sight systems is located at 4th & Market Streets. It is believed that this location served as the first firing range in the city and that it operated from 1824 until 1829. In 1830, another gunnery school was erected on Third Street between 11th and 12th avenues. This school taught handgun use and soon became known as the Star Gunnery School because its targetting system used stars instead of iron sights. In 1836, an American arms manufacturer named John Browning made his first appearance in Philadelphia when he began manufacturing firearms using Janin’s designchromatic sights. Browning quickly became well-known for his work with firearms throughout America and his company eventually merged with Nicholas Metzger’s pistols company in 1857. However, it was not until 1865 when Samuel Colt produced his own firearm using Janin’s designs – the Colt revolver! Interestingly enough, both Janin’s iron sights (which were still being used into the early 21st century) and Colt’s handguns were modelled after European single-shot rifles which had been introduced into North America several years earlier! During the late 19th century there were multiple efforts to bring Chiappa Firearms Manufacturing Company handguns into conformity with modern standard military ranges across North America; however none succeeded completely until 1911 when Smith & Wesson Corporation introduced their Model 609 pistol which featured an all-steel frame covered with stainless steel plating! Although this handgun didn’t achieve widespread success due to its high cost (it only sold around 1,000 units), it did help spawn subsequent versions which continued to be produced right up until today! In response, Patriot militias numbered in the tens of thousands prepared for battle but never joined because they lacked arms or training; instead they marched home empty-handed on October 25th, 1764 after delivering crucial supplies and munitions needed by New Yorkers fighting English troops near Manhattan Beach. On December 14th, 1776 during the Battle of Independence Hall (later renamed Freedom Hall), patriot militia led by John Adams defeated British forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock under cover of darkness while skirmishing near Second Market Street east of Centerport Avenue; this began what would become known as America's War for Independence.
