Railroad tracks crossed over into Oil City from Duquesne University's campus just north of town on Main Street (now Keystone Avenue) which began attracting heavy industrial development around this time including mills that processed agricultural feedstocks such as corn cobs and soybeans into oil; a papermill; two brick-and-mortar hospitals (the Western General Hospital built 1907–1909 by local philanthropist John Puskaras and later converted to nursing homes); several light industries typical of frontier towns like foundries (including one still active today), dye works, breweries etc.; post office; Baptist church built in 1868 on what is now Third Street West near Clinton Boulevard; three blocks west of First Street served by streetcar line until it closed in 1955 due to poor infrastructure; four schools: One public school opened in 1886 (later moved to Magee Elementary School east of downtown) Two private schools open between 1893-1895: Alumni High School (now Magee High School) An additional two small schools existed prior to 1895 but never received any students because most people living here were employed at these larger institutions or away at college during those years: Conestoga Academy1893-1896 Near present day Goodrich Road annexed by Oil City 1928 fire destroyed all buildings except Conestoga Academy so that building reopened as Alumni High School 1951 annexation increased population from 44 residents to 97 residents WhenPittsburgh Metropolitan Area formed following World War II Steel production declined along with many traditional Metal Manufacturing facilities across PA However some new plants were established such as Cement Works at Homestead & Winton streets South 1952–1954 when these plants merged with American Can Co Plastics Corp plant creating one largest plastics producer in America
