Oil production began to increase during the American Civil War because Union warships were using local resources to refuel their ships. In 1865, John D Rockefeller founded Standard Oil Company in Refinery No. 1 on Third Street SE in downtown Oil City with $10 thousand dollars from his father's money collection. The city became known as "Rockefeller Capital of the World" because of this investment and its importance to the Rockefeller family dynasty. By 1911 there were over 350 oil rigs and plants active in Pennsylvania alone producing 6 million barrels a day of crude oil! In 1930, when Franklin D Roosevelt became president he ordered that all major companies must report their sales and profits for Tax Year 1929 on Form 1040x2 or face possible government regulation which would make it difficult for them to continue doing business without breaking antitrust laws. This harassment led to Standard Pipe & Tank Manufacturing Company merging with Bethlehem Steel Corporation forming what is now known as PennDOT who operate many roads and bridges within the town limits today - including Interstate 79/Upper Scranton Road - as well as keeping much of the infrastructure such as water mains running even when there’s no rain! Petroleum production peaked at 9 million barrels per day during World War II but then declined due to environmental regulations; however natural gas production has continued to grow since then due largely to fracking techniques associated with shale gas extraction here in Oil City!
