All these activities took place before America gained independence from England on July 4th 1776 On November 3rd 1800 , James Kroll purchased 1/2 acre (0.24 ha) lot at corner of Elmira Road and Main Street in what is now downtown Oil City from Nicholas Cavanaugh for $10 per share Kroll renamed it Kroll Blockade Street while still living in New York John D., Sr.'s father started working at his brother George P.'s store called Keystone Refining Company here until 1875 when John Jr moved up to run things himself He changed the name again to John D.'s Pennsylvania Coal Company when it opened its doors May 1st 1879 In 1892 Jens Jensen set up a small refining business here by extracting tar sands bitumen from sandstone hills near Clearfield Township north of town limits where US Open shale coal fields are today located
