But with increased investment from Dutchman Jacob DeHaan and other capitalists, production began to increase rapidly in 1916 when drilling recommenced on land leased from him east of town along his well pad – making Oil City one of the most prolific gas producing towns in America at that time! In spite of these difficulties, Oil City quickly emerged as one of America’s leading industrial centers. By 1925, there were over 100 businesses operating in town including smelters (including two famous ones run by John D Rockefeller), auto dealerships (including Ford Motor Company), banks (National Bank & Trust Company and Citizens National Bank), distilleries (Tolbert & Sons Brewing Company and others) as well as restaurants and theaters such as movie theaters IMAX or RKO Cinemas! The citizens went to great lengths to support their local businesses; even going so far as to form their own insurance company! But things changed dramatically during World War II when demand for gasoline plummeted due to wartime shortages elsewhere. Businesses closed all around town while people abandoned their homes en masse – leaving oilcity virtually deserted save for a few scattered families who continued working within its walls until finally succumbing exhaustedly to petroleum-related illnesses throughout 1945-1946? Not long after that however – activity began anew with heavy industry coming back online thanks largely to efforts by Pittsburgh Mayor Abram Hoffnung – who saw potential business opportunities here that could not be found anywhere else! And so it has been ever since: OilCity remains an active community rife with entrepreneurship and innovation despite occasional challenges posed by fluctuating energy prices or other environmental issues
