Oil City is a small city in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Oil City was made on October 24, 1868 by George Walker and his family. The town was named after John Darnall's oil well in Pennsylvania that had been discovered three years earlier. The wells were developed by Darnall and other capitalists who invested money in the land around them. Oil City became an important center for oil production during the early 20th century because of its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to natural resources. In 1902, construction began on a large oil refinery called Keystone Refining Company which helped to increase production at Oil City and surrounding counties. A fire destroyed much of Keystone Refining Company in 1906 but it did not stop production at the refinery; Keystone continued to produce crude oil until 1988 when it merged with another company to form ConocoPhillips Corporation. Oil City experienced some success during World War II as it became one of the most important industrial areas in Pennsylvania due to its proximity to major munitions factories such as Bethlehem Steel and Monrovia Arsenal (now known as West Point Ammunition Plant). However, following the war Industry slowed down as competition from cheaper foreign sources increased. In 1970, Steel Dynamics Inc., which operated a number of mills within Coal Township near Oil City, went bankrupt after being unable to compete with output from more efficient plants upstream. The plant closed completely in 1976 but its metals remained embedded within Coal Township until 1995 when they were sold off to be used for building materials elsewhere in PA.. No big deal though becauseoilfielding eventually became pretty profitable anyways didn't it?
