In the early 1800s, Oil City was an important center for firearms production and business. The city was home to a number ofGunsmith shops, rifle manufacturers, shotgun manufacturers, and muzzleloader manufacturers. In 1815, the first rifle in the United States was made in Oil City. By 1830, gun manufacturing had become an important part of the city's economy. At that time, Oil City also became known as "the first commercial center for arms manufacture in Pennsylvania." The Gunsmith shop operated by Nicholas Smith located at 233 S 3rd Street continued to be operational into the 1870s. The Shotgun Manufacturing Co., Inc., which operated from 1866-1976 at 813 North Broadway (later renamed 5th & Market Streets), is considered one of Pittsburgh's most significant businesses of this period. This company manufactured shotguns and revolvers under several different nameplates including Browning Arms Company (1872-1926), National Firearms Works (1927-1945), Colt Arms Corporation (1946-present) and Winchester Repeating Arms Company (1920-present). In 1875, Winchester Repeating Arms Company began producing cases for their rifles in oil drums from which they could produce up to 10 rounds per drum. Ammunition manufacturing started in 1886 when John Fenton founded The John Fenton Armory on Orchard Street near Bellefonte Avenue. This armory produced both rifles and pistols according to their own specifications rather than those set by either the government or firearm companies of the day.
