Oil City is home to three refineries—Arco Energy, Marathon Petroleum and Pennzoil—and numerous other businesses including chemical plants and steel mills. The downtown area has been renovated extensively in recent years with new attractions such as an amusement park, a medical center, and a light show that features giant oil drums filled with music and lights.

Oil City is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. The city is named for an oil well discovered in 1859. The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutchman Hendrick van Rensselaer and Frenchmen Gabriel de la Salle in 1669 and 1670, respectively. In 1753, George Washington passed through the area on his way to Mount Vernon. Oil seeped out of the earth here during this time as Native Americans used it for their own needs rather than selling it to others. It wasn’t until 1859 when a man by the name of John Duryea drilled a well in what is now Butler County that exploration began for oil hereabouts. The first wells yielded little oil but subsequent discoveries led to production reaching 1 million barrels per day by 1911. This production stopped shortly thereafter due to technological advances as well as environmental changes such as over-pumping from industry into nearby water supplies which caused salt water intrusion and flooding downstream. The town of Oil City was platted on July 12, 1903 by James Sweeny and Wm Hustedt with platting beginning on October 3rd of that year . Construction continued slowly throughout 1903 due to funding shortages stemming from World War I; however, after President Wilson’s Executive Order 9291 (January 8, 1916) directed all federal agencies “to give financial assistance … for the erection of public buildings or other improvements necessary for carrying out any function assigned them by law or regulation thereof” local businesses were able to receive help from various state government sources including $5,000 from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture . This order helped spur economic development inOil City with various stores opening up along Third Street such as Goudreau Drug Store & Cafe , First National Bank & Trust Company , hardware store Jumbo Hardware etc.; also several new schools being built such as High School #2 (now known as White Hall Elementary School) and Bethlehem Steel Company plant #2 which became home to both American Can inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Bethlehem Steel Company Foundry etc.; while downtown business areas like Fourth and Fifth Streets experienced rapid growth with small restaurants becoming popular among workers assembling cars at Chrysler Motor Corporation plants nearby; construction stopped again soon afterwards when resources became more scarce during World War II followed by postwar austerity which impacted many sectors including retail trade although some new developments did occur include One Two Three Clothing Center (now known as Grandview Mall), PNC Bank branch called Erie Savings Bank Plaza - now part of Wells Fargo - Fullerton's Steakhouse - later purchased by Macy's Incorporated Subsequent waves of immigration have brought people who work in diverse industries such as engineering, health care/PHI services, food service/takeout etc.; making today Oil City one Of The Most Diversity Driven Cities In America . Today Oil City remains an important manufacturing center with a large auto assembly plant operated by Ford Motor Company ; light industrial activity includes two paper mills operated by J&R Paper Products Incorporated ; two shipyards – US Marine Corp Yard #1&US Naval Shipyard Yard #2 - produce missiles & submarines; homebuilders (eagerly awaiting approval from zoning authorities permitting high-rise building projects) are starting up around Second Avenue between Market Street and State Street while another large development project is currently under construction dubbed "The Gateway" at Ninth Avenue between State Street and Market Street
