Norristown is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Norristown was once an agricultural community with small-scale retail and service businesses located along Route 23 and Bethlehem Pike. A new courthouse and jail were erected in the early 20th century on land donated by banker George H. Stephens. In 1907, local businessman Julius Rosenwald purchased some of Stephens' land ensuring that Norristown would become one of his main business areas throughout his life. After Rosenwald's death in 1922, much of his estate went to help finance what became known as "The Great Philanthropy" which included giving away over $30 million dollars to various causes during its lifetime. One reason Norristown has continued to thrive for so many decades is its excellent infrastructure - including two large public universities (Universidad de Puerto Rico School of Medicine and Temple University) as well as several hospitals (Eliot Medical Center, Centenary Hospital), a lively shopping district full of small businesses, and extensive light rail services making it easy to get around town.
