The first post office was established in 1840 and began serving residents of what is now Upper Merion Township. The first school was built in 1845 and it became an all-male institution until girls were admitted in 1912. In 1865, Norristown erected its first public building – a frame schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1870, Reverend Ezra Taft Benson helped to found the Methodist Episcopal Church here and served as pastor until his death in 1896. during his time there were also several churches built here including Presbyterian (1872), Baptist (1879), Congregationalist (1892), Jewish (1912) and Evangelical Lutheran (2002). The largest employer here for many years has been PNC Financial Services which has its headquarters on Main Street off Winchester Avenue. Other large employers include Bethlehem Steel Corporation who manufactured iron products for America during World War II and Temple University who hosted NCAA basketball championships from 1964 to 1996
