Norristown, Pennsylvania is an old town in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. The population was 41,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Lehigh County after Allentown. The town was founded in 1750 by German settlers who named it Norristown Township, which later became Norristown Borough and then Norristown-Allentown Borough. The name "NorristOWN" originated from a grant from King George II in 1785 to Peter Cartwright for land along the Susquehanna River. The first store opened in 1814 and the first school opened in 1821. In 1857, Norristown became a borough and then a city on April 14th of that year under the leadership of Mayor John Fenton. On July 1st of that year, it became part of the new Reading County when it was created following the Census Bureau's decision to redraw Pennsylvania’s congressional districts based on population changes during the Civil War (the original District 15 had been split between Allegheny and Berks counties). On December 5th, 2011, City Council voted 3-2 to annex neighboring Newtown Township into Norristown effective January 1st 2012; this effectively made NorristOWN city-wide again with annexations taking place all along Beaver Street corridor from State Street eastward through Newtown Park/South Park Drive until Southpark Drive reached Interstate 76 near Northumberland Avenue. In 2013, norrisstown annexed nearby Springettsbury Township as well as parts of Greencastle Township due to population growth within those municipalities since 2010; these annexations were retroactive to January 1st, 2013

Norristown is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Lehigh County. The first European settlers arrived in 1795 and the community was established as a trading post on the Susquehanna River by Nicholas Norris. In 1824, it became a borough and was renamed Norristown after its founder's father, Norris College president James H. Norris. The town has many notable residents including: George Washington Carver, who settled here with his family in 1864; physicist Ernest Rutherford; Ulysses S Grant; author Harlan Ellison; Dave Thomas (founder of Thomas & Friends); and basketball coach Rick Majerus. Additionally, several large businesses have been located here such as PNC Financial Services and Bethlehem Steel Corporation which are still active today. Norristown is a town in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Norristown" means "farmstead on the way to Bethlehem." It was first settled by German immigrants in 1784. In 1819, Norristown became the seat of government for Lebanon County and remained so until 1861 when it became part of the newly formed Philadelphia County. The earliest known settlers were Germans who arrived in 1784 as part of an effort to settle around Mount Pleasant in what is now Delaware Township. By 1800, they had established a farmstead and named it Norristown after their hometown of Nürnberg, Germany. Because much of what is now Lebanon County was controlled by British authorities during its early history, there are several references to settlements being located along present-day routes 22 and 3A which ran through norristown at various points throughout those years; one reference refers to a "German Settlement" north of Market Street while anotherreference mentions an earlier Dutch settlement that existed near wherepresent-day Route 22 crosses the Schuylkill River north of Center City proper". In 1819, when Lebanon County was created from parts ofPhiladelphia County, Norristown became its seat and continued as such until 1861 when it become part of Philadelphia County under new management (under then-Governor Andrew Johnson). During this time period there were numerous military engagements fought in and around Norristown including those fought at Gettysburg Battlefield; Antietam Heights; and Monmouth Junction including the Battle for Berlin Road which took place on December 12th 1862 during American Civil War efforts to retakePittsburgh from Confederate control following General Robert Easley's failed siege attempt there two weeks earlier. During this time period many people also migrated to what would become norristown from other areas withinPhiladelphia county including working class families moving out into rural areas east and west of Center City while more affluent families relocated closer to downtown with shops/movies/restaurants developing along North Broad Street between 15th & 16th Streets NW. The most significant development that took place during this timeperiod occurred on North Broad Street adjacent to where present day Route 22 intersects Schuylkill River National Wildlife Refuge resulting in what has come been called "the Most Significant Retail Development innorristOWN's History". This large shopping center attracted customers from all over northeastern Pennsylvania as well as southeastern Marylandand even down into Georgia due to its proximity to Interstate 80 - makingnorrisstown one of the most intensely marketed communities outsideofDowntown Philly . As local interests shifted increasingly towards central business districts withinPhiladelphia COUNTY rather than focused on smaller communities like norrisstown – consisting primarilyof Working Class homeowners whooped up around requisite access theretoocities generally afforded them less opportunityto grow rich off their homes but did not enjoy centralized city services or amenities – businesses started abandoningnorristromen entirely instead turning inwardbhowing allegiance not just unto downtown but alsoto regional politicians who frequently visited themottelevision setsrather than shaking hands with themoutsidetheirhouses
