In 1907, the Norristown Rifle and Pistol Club purchased its first handgun, an 8-shot Smith & Wesson revolver. The club also became one of the earliest members of the Pennsylvania Rifle Association. Norristown is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 33,865 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Luzerne County after Scranton. The borough of Norristown is also each of the two cities within Luzerne County: Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre. Norristown was founded by Nicholas Norriton in 1777 as a small trading post on the Mahoning River. In 1834, it became an incorporated town when the area surrounding it became part of the new county of Luzerne. The first mayor was Moses Sargent and the first recorder was John Prentice. By 1870, Norristown had become one of the largest towns in Pennsylvania with a population over 10,000 people. In 1969, following passage of Act XVIII of that year which granted voting rights to African Americans over 21 years old, Norristown began to experience rapid growth with its black residents making up almost 50% of its population by 1990. In 2001, following completion of massive renovation and expansion projects at various municipal buildings including police headquarters and city hall (the current building dates back to 1892), Norristown experienced its most recent period of growth; this time reaching nearly 60% minority representation by 2011 according to US Census figures

Norristown is located in eastern Pennsylvania, about 25 miles south of Philadelphia. It was founded by Nicholas Norristown in 1755 as a village on the west bank of the Schuylkill River. The town grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to its location near major transportation routes and its access to minerals and lumber. The town's growth slowed during the 20th century, but it has since regained some of its former commercial strength. Today, Norristown is a primarily rural community with a small population density. However, its rich history makes it an important destination for researchers interested in Pennsylvania's history. Norristown was first settled by Europeans in what is now central Pennsylvania around 1755. At that time, this area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The settlers who arrived in what is now Norristown were mostly farmers and their families. They built homes along the Schuylkill River and began to trade goods with neighboring settlements. In 1768, Nicholas Norristown Sr., one of the early settlers, erected a fence around his home so that his family could protect it from Indian raids. As early as 1770, NorristOWN had started trading with other communities in central Pennsylvania including Doylestown on the Delaware River and Westmoreland on Susquehanna River (now Allentown). These traders likely acquired goods such as foodstuffs and raw materials from Native Americans living near them before selling these items back to their neighbors at high prices or exchanging goods altogether. By 1800, however, most of these trade contacts had ceased due to growing rivalry between British colonists farther north and American Indians living east of the Appalachian Mountains (the Iroquois Confederacy). Norrisstown experienced some success during this period though it did not reach its full potential until after independence from Britain was achieved in 1867. After becoming an independent state under Constitutionally-mandated rule following America's victory over Great Britain at Yorktown Heights, PA (the Battle of Antietam), officials determined that new towns should be established throughout western Pennsylvania pursuant to Article VIII section 1 thereof which read: "All proper points within limits prescribed by law for establishing towns shall be respectively divided into three classes according to their respective numbers; One class for those having more than five thousand inhabitants; Two classes for those having less than one thousand inhabitants; And Three classes for those having no number at all." This provision allowedfor establishment of towns with populations greater than 500 residents without approval from upperclass proprietors residing inside Limits 2&3 Classified Towns.* norrisstown quickly became one such newly created town*. Norristown is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 54,488 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in Norristown County and one of its two cities. The other city is Allentown. Norristown was founded by Germans in 1795 as a small farming community on the east bank of the Monongahela River, about south of what is now downtown Pittsburgh. The name Norristown derived from Norse words meaning "north-west" and "town", since it lay to the north of present-day Pittsburgh and east of Point State Park. In 1825, settlers moved into what became Norristown from northeastern Pennsylvania's Cumberland County and began agricultural production that would support a growing town. By 1830, Norristown had become an important commercial center with trade connections to Philadelphia and Baltimore; it also boasted a public school system that served residents throughout Allegheny County. In 1864, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant headquarters were located in Norristown; Union forces under General Robert Ewell destroyed most of East Liberty Township before moving on to attack Confederate forces at Gettysburg on July 3 that year. As part of Operation Crossroads (July 1863), Union forces burned down many homes along Main Street in eastern NorristOWN after capturing several miles (16 kilometers) across town from Confederate positions near Market Square; this action helped rally local support for Union cause during the war years and contributed to alliances betweenNorristOWN's business owners and generals throughout 1865–1868 when Washingtonians were trying to rebuild after Fort Sumter was captured by Confederate troops early that year. The following year saw another significant event when construction began on what would become West View Cemetery which opened in November 1868; this cemetery served as both burial ground for locals who died during Reconstruction Era hostilities as well as soldiers killed or wounded while serving in all theatres of war including Petersburg Siege (1865–1866).
