Norristown, Pennsylvania is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest municipality in Luzerne County after Scranton and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The name Norristown derives from the Potomac River. The first settlers in what is now Norristown were farmers who arrived around 1795. By 1813, they had built a gristmill on the confluence of the rivers West Branch and North Branch. A post office called Norristown was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1909. In that year, it was renamed to honor Georgenor Johnstone Norris (1792–1865), an early settler who had helped build roads and bridges in eastern PA. In 1830, James Cockerill organized a group of men to purchase land east of what is now downtown Norristown and begin development of what would become known as Cockerill Park. This initial effort failed but new investors soon followed with plans for a series of cotton plantations located along the South Branch of the Potomac River near present day Overbrook Mall and Rosemont Cemetery. However, this venture failed as well due to lack of capital and competition from other entrepreneurs nearby. However, by 1835 some progress had been made with mills being erected at Overbrook mall and Rosesmont Cemetery; however these did not generate much economic activity until after slavery was abolished throughout most of America during Reconstruction (1877). After this important event local farmers began marketing their crops directly to Philadelphia merchants through wagon trains bringing produce all the way from Georgia or Alabama rather than shipping it downriver via boat or train which took weeks or even months! During this time some Norristowners also started developing businesses such as narrow gauge Railroad traction powered by steam locomotives moving goods between points northward on main lines like Harrisburg and Bethlehem; these companies became nationally known during this period as "the era of Pennsylania's railroad enterprises." At first these companies operated primarily within their own communities but later branched out into other markets including Baltimore City (west side) where one company became part owner of an important streetcar line called Camden & Susquehanna Railway Company serving both Baltimore City proper as well as suburbs such as Catonsville; eventually operations were moved to Wilmington Delaware where rail traffic increased substantially making it an ideal location for larger industrial plants which would have required a large waterfront area for storage plus access to waterwayside transportation for goods transported inland by riverboat etc.. A number norristowners also served in high positions during this time including Congressman James Kapp(D-PA), Treasurer Samuel Pomeroy(R-OH), Mayor John Fenton (D-NY) among others - helping
Norristown was founded in 1765 by George Washington. The town was named after the Norristown Ridge, a mountain range in central Pennsylvania. In 1854, the railroad reached Norristown and began to grow the town. In 1918, Norristown became a city and grew rapidly with businesses and residences coming from outside of Philadelphia. In 1952, the city annexed part of nearby Burlington Township which made Norristown even more populous. In 1984, faced with budget cuts, the City Council enacted an ordinance that limits job growth to 2% each year for two years. This resulted in a decrease in business activity in the town and its economy went into decline while other towns within Philadelphia grew faster due to this policy change. The City Council repealed the ordinance in 1986 because it no longer tapered off job growth but instead kept Growth Rate at 2%. As a result of this policy change, jobs were lost in Norristown as well as throughout Philadelphia due to technological advances that have replaced many human-based jobs with machine-based ones. Since then, efforts have been made by both city government and business owners to revive the community's economy through various initiatives such as arts programming, increased spending on infrastructure projects like public transportation alternatives and new development near high-traffic areas like Center City or University Park
