Norristown, Pennsylvania is a city in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on the North Branch of the Lehigh River. The population was 61,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Bucks County after east Pittsburgh and is home to Norristown High School, one of two high schools in Pennsylvania that are both state-of-the-art buildings (the other being Penn State University's Beavercreek campus). The first high school in Norristown was built on Locust Street in 1887. In 1916, it became part of the borough of Norristown and was renamed to its current name. In 1955, it merged with neighboring boroughs Haverford Township and Johnstown to form what is now known as Norristown–Haverford Township. The merger resulted in the addition of a new high school building on West Side Street - which remains now one of only two high schools in Pennsylvania that are both state-of-the-art buildings (the other being Penn State University's Beavercreek campus). In 1961, Norristown Area School District No. 10 was formed when all six municipalities consolidated into one district under then Superintendent vincent Ritchie. That same year saw the opening of what would become known as "The Big Three"Norristown High Schools: Northside (now part of Lower Merion), Southside (now part of Manorville), and Eastside (now part of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel HS). At that time there were just 15 students per classroom at these three schools combined! It wasn't until 1978 that our current building - complete with air conditioning and a full gymnasium - went up for occupancy! It is the second most populous municipality in Lehigh County and the seventh largest city in Pennsylvania. The Norristown Historic District encompasses 318 blocks of downtown Norristown and portions of the outlying boroughs of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Whitehall. The district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. Norristown was founded by Nicholas Norrington in 1795 as a small settlement on the north side of what is now Swedesboro Township east of present-day Allentown. In 1814, it became part of Lower Lehigh Township; but because Upper Lehigh Township was formed from land taken from Lower Lehigh Township after 1828 to create what is now Northampton County, Norristown remained an independent municipality until 1924 when it merged with neighboring Allentown into one entity. The first store opened in Norristown on December 12, 1795 by Nicholas Norrington and his brother-in-law Isaac Holton. In 1800 John Patten built a house near where Main Street meets Chestnut Street for himself and his wifeSarah Patten Nevin to live while he ran a business importing goods from Europe. By 1802 John Patten had moved his business to what is today Meeting Street (norristowest corner), between Third and Fourth Streets. A few years later Daniel Dennison bought land where Third Street intersects Chestnut streets for himself and his son Samuel Dennison to build agrange which still stands today (now part of Second Avenue). On July 14th, 1805 Daniel Dennison married Mary Ann Butler at their grange; they would have four children – three boys and one girl – before her death in1826 at age 31 due to yellow fever pandemic then sweeping through America at that time: "Her death cut short not only this family but also many others who might have enjoyed better days ahead." By 1830 there were over 150 residents living in NorristOWN including citizens such as George Washington Carver who also operated a farm around this time along with several stores including Mr Brown's grocery located on Meeting street across from First Baptist Church which did very well during prohibition years until 1933 when all those businesses closed due to raids by local police department led by Deputy Chief William Fenton whose father had run Brown's grocery before him - another significant event that helped spur development around town although some buildings were actually destroyed during World War II bombing raid conducted by American military forces without warning or prior notice resulting in great loss/damage especially among historic storefronts like Brown's Grocery which continued up until its demolition following that raid - quite an ironic outcome given how much community spirit existed during those times period! One other notable resident during these early years was Elias Parish who served as justice of peace forLehigh Co., Philemon Mifflin who later becamemayoralty president & ownerof Philadelphia Eagles football team & founderof Preexistingevelopment corporationlater knownas Penn State University In 1850 both Daniel Dennion & Samuel Dennison passed away leaving their properties undivided & property lines blurred leading to heated lawsuits over succession contests ensuing decades In 1875 Abraham Baldwin married Sarah Hruby whose father owned two lots adjacent to Daniel Dennion's old home west of Center Road near intersection with Park Row They had 3 children: Alonzo Baldwin (brought up within Baldwinsville area), Infant Brooklyn Manning (brought up within Manningstown area) & Eleanor Baldwin (raised mostly outside Philadelphia). Mrs Abraham Baldwin died young giving birth prematurely deformed baby daughter named Ida Beatrice Abramson born January 7th 1880 just minutes after she arrived safe& sound at home with Dr Richard Saylor MD under anesthesia having previous surgery done on September 8th 1860 concurrent w Dr James Buchanan Proctor performing cesarean section soon thereafter mother surgically delivered healthy baby girl weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces becoming Philly’s first ever pediatrician Albany Wright Patterson Jr., cofounder UPMC thenceforth known as “Dr Pat” followed suit about 2 months later becoming physician general for newly organized country USA thru merger process resulting in entire nation beingorganized under one single health care provider thereby cutting cost considerably however Baby Ida tragically lost her life 4 months premature after developing pneumonia caused by air pollution common then w/o effective treatment though various prophylactic measures including bed rest recuperated safely home eventually becoming CEOandownerof UPMC Stroudsburg PA medical complex ↑related article ↑ In 1905 Robert Crolly opened Crolly’s bakerynoodle stand location off Market Street southwest OF Swedesboro Rd [then Swedesboro Road] serving commuters traveling eastbound on Market street travelling westbound onto Swedesboro Rd purchased property lot adjoining former Depot Garage lot used vandals while stored food unloading occasioning no damage fortunately incident occurred w/out any negative consequences
