Norristown is one of the oldest towns in Montgomery County and was founded by English settlers in 1753. The first store was built in 1754 and the first school was opened in 1757. Norristown became an agricultural center during the 19th century as its landholdings grew in acreage and production of cropssuch as wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton, potatoes, applesauce, milk and cheese. During World War II Norristown served as a training ground for Allied troops who were fighting in Europe. In 1951 Norristown incorporated as a borough; it remained an independent municipality until 2015 when it became a city under Mayor Jim Kenney's leadership. The history of Norristown can be traced back to early 1800s when two groups of immigrants arrived in America: Irish Catholics and Germans from Prussia (now Germany). They began farming what would become known as "the Guttersnip". By 1830 there were over 100 farms located around Norrisstown including many belonging to wealthy Pennsylvanian farmers such as James Mellon who donated land to establish what would become known as the Morris Park development near present-day Market Street/Route 22nd Street/Norris Avenue/Dalhousie Place. At that time much of what exists today within downtown Norristown had not been developed yet due to heavy forestation which limited access to larger parcels for settlement east of Drexel Hill Road (now Lansdowne Avenue). However this soon changed with major investments by developers such as John Waddell who purchased large tracts of farmland between 1836-1840 along Dalhousie Place making him one of the earliest Developers & Landlords within present day downtownNorrisstown along with his partner Isaac Nevin who acquired additional property on South High Street between Hicks Lane & Market Streets sometime after 1846-48 inclusive During Reconstruction following the American Civil War most black Americans left or were driven out during The Great Migration which began across America during 1865 primarily targeting cities such as Baltimore & Chicago where they could find work opportunities unavailable to them northward. Many African Americans settled throughout central Pennsylvania along with adjacent Delaware County forming what are now called "The Great Migration" Families like those from West Point Bringing their enslaved families started arriving beginning around 1850 especially among German Immigrants living on farmssteading rural areas near Reading & Bethlehem before traveling eastward into PA via roads like Lancaster Pike then New Hope Road then Railtown Road eventually reaching western PA through Snyder’s Passage (today’s Northumberland County) . Some individuals even traveled further west past Clearfield Township into Carbon County becoming known collectively as “The Great Schleicher bands” after Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Schleicher who migrated from Bavaria southward beginning around 1810 settling initially near Tubman Creek before continuing on through Clearfield Township becoming known primarily for his contraband tobacco business operation later expanding into other commodities including coal but also engaging in various mining activities . In addition another group considered "The LittleSchleichers" consisting mostly white Protestant Protestants originating from southern England whose ancestors had immigrated prior to 1700 arrived starting around 1840 primarily residing on farmssteading rural areas near Yorktown Heights reaching eastern PA by way of Lancaster Pike then New Hope Road then Railtown Road ultimately reaching western PA through Snyder’s Passage (today's Northumberland County) joining forces with other local whites forming Ethnic Groups commonly referred to collectively today simply by terms such as “The Gonds” or “The Italians” while still retaining certain cultural practices specific to their respective backgrounds however all efforts currently being made by both sides towards assimilation have so far failed resulting essentially only in increased hostilities& resentment rather than integration .....
