Norristown is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,828 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Bucks County after Philadelphia. As of the 2010 census, Norristown had a total area of , of which (or 98%) was land and (or 2%) was water. As of the 2000 census, Norristown had a total area of . The first gun in what is now Norristown was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte circa 1768 for use against Indians at Fort Duquesne on the Schuylkill River. There were several other guns made here before 1792 when both George Washington and James K. Polk were inaugurated as president and Ulysses S. Grant became secretary of war; norristown would be incorporated as a borough until 1836. In 1812 Sarah Morse bought 1/3rd interest in John Fenton's manufacturing business on Elm Street from him and began to sell pistols there; this started pistol making here permanently In 1837 Samuel Colt began making revolvers here under license from Nicholas-Jacques Conte who also manufactured firearms for England's Royal Navy. He moved his business to Hartford early in 1840 but continued to produce revolvers here until his death three years later due to an illness contracted while living in Norristown In 1861 Horace Mann organized local residents into two groups: one group tried to get money from Washington so they could build a school (it failed), while another group met with Mayor Dixon to discuss creating public transportation within town limits) but no action was taken until 1865 when John Darrow resigned as mayor after being impeached for bribery charges His successor Charles Evans pushed through plans for a town hall and library but these projects never came to fruition due to opposition from wealthy landowners who saw them as encroachment on their propertyrights In 1870 Samuel Colt donated $1 million towards the construction of Palmer Station which served as an important stop on Colt's western railroads However this gift did not lead to further progress because many local businessmen desired access only to trade goods with eastern markets rather than investing in infrastructure development Instead Palmer Station slowly declined over time becoming more like every other smalltown America during the period between World War I and World War II
